Successful adaptation of twinning concept for global neurosurgery collaborations —a validation study
ConclusionThis study validated the use of the INTIMA model previously described in a mission by Swedish African Neurosurgical Collaboration (SANC). The model is sustainable and produces notable results. The core strength of the model is in the multidisciplinary team securing all the aspects and steps of the neurosurgical care. Installation of an operating microscope opened for further microsurgical possibilities, improving the neurosurgical care in The Gambia. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Assessing the impact of a cleaning programme on environmental hygiene in labour and neonatal wards: an exploratory study in The Gambia
ConclusionsKeeping a hospital clean is fundamental to good care, but training hospital cleaning staff in this low-income country neonatal unit failed to reduce surface contamination levels. Further qualitative investigation revealed multiple external factors that challenged any possible impact of the cleaning programme. Further work is needed to address barriers to hospital cleaning in low-income hospitals. (Source: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control)

The effect of physical barriers under a raised house on mosquito entry: an experimental study in rural Gambia
Anopheles gambiae, the major malaria mosquito in sub-Saharan Africa, feed largely indoors at night. Raising a house off the ground with no barriers underneath reduces mosquito-house entry. This experiment tested ... (Source: Malaria Journal)

Impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccination on pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage in the Gambia: Population-based cross-sectional surveys
CONCLUSIONS: Introduction of PCV was associated with reduced VT pneumococcal carriage in young, and older children, although with substantial residual prevalence. Persisting VT, and non-VT, carriage indicate significant, persistent transmission of pneumococci in the population.PMID:38490820 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.066 (Source: Vaccine)

Anticoagulation control among patients on vitamin K antagonists in nine countries in Sub-Saharan Africa
This study assessed the quality of anticoagulation and associated factors among VKA-treated patients in nine SSA countries. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of randomly selected patients on anticoagulation from 20 clinics in Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, and South Africa. Eligible participants were those on VKAs for at least three months and with at least four international normalised ratios (INR) results in 2019 –2021. We report the proportion of INR values in the therapeutic range, time-in-therapeutic range (TTR) using the Rosendaal method, ...

Early iron supplementation in exclusively breastfed Gambian infants: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: In exclusively breastfed Gambian infants, iron supplementation from 6 weeks of age was associated with a significant improvement in markers of iron status at around 6 months of age. There was no indication of adverse effects on growth or infections.PMID:38420570 | PMC:PMC10898279 | DOI:10.2471/BLT.23.289942 (Source: Bulletin of the World Health Organization)

Cigarette excise tax structure and cigarette prices in nine sub-Saharan African countries: evidence from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey
Conclusions Regional tax directives that require the adoption of uniform specific excise taxes, or high minimum specific floors, could be an efficient way to get multiple African countries to adopt a tax structure that reduces substitution possibilities in response to excise tax increases.
