Perinatal deaths and low birthweight in an urban health centre in the Gambia: A prospective cohort study
Afr J Reprod Health. 2022 Mar;26(3):20-28. doi: 10.29063/ajrh2022/v26i3.3.ABSTRACTPerinatal deaths (stillbirths after 28 weeks gestation and early neonatal deaths) are rarely reported separately but are the deaths most closely associated with complications during pregnancy, birth and the first days of life. We conducted a prospective cohort study to report perinatal deaths, late neonatal deaths and low birthweight babies as they occur. This cohort of birth outcomes from The Gambia was conducted between 2012 and 2016 and followed 1611 women attending a government-supported health center from the first antenatal visit to 28 ...

Mapping the timeliness of routine childhood vaccination in The Gambia: A spatial modelling study
CONCLUSIONS: Our approach provides decision-makers with a valuable tool to better understand local patterns of untimely childhood vaccination and identify districts where strengthening vaccine delivery systems could have the greatest impact.PMID:37563051 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.004 (Source: Vaccine)

Problems with accessing healthcare and associated factors among reproductive-aged women in the Gambia using Gambia Demographic and Health Survey 2019/2020: a cross-sectional study
Conclusion Problems of accessing healthcare among women of reproductive age were high in the Gambia. Age, region, working status, parity, residence, wealth and place of delivery were the identified factors associated with problems of accessing healthcare. Policymakers and public health experts should consider those factors while designing maternal healthcare programmes. Affordable healthcare service programmes should be designed to increase healthcare access in the Gambia. (Source: BMJ Open)

Bronchodilator-responsive bronchiolar obstruction in term neonates: a case series
ConclusionClinically determined bronchiolar obstructions in term neonates can be relieved with bronchodilators and steroids, and this treatment modality, if employed where the pathological process can be established, can reduce the demand on scarce resources in resource-poor countries. Pregnancy-related mortality up to 1 year postpartum in sub-Saharan Africa: an analysis of verbal autopsy data from six countries
CONCLUSIONS: Cause of death data from the extended postpartum period are critical to inform prevention. The dominance of HIV and TB, other infectious and non-communicable diseases to (late) pregnancy-related mortality highlights the need for better integration of non-obstetric care with ante-, intra- and postpartum care in high-burden settings.PMID:37469195 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17606 (Source: BJOG : An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)
