Development of Mucoadhesive Microspheres for Intranasal Delivery of Fluconazole as an Alternative Treatment of Cryptococcal Meningitis Infection in Patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency
This study aimed to develop a mucoadhesive microsphere delivery system for fluconazole for the intranasal route. Microspheres of mucoadhesive fluconazole formulation variables, such as different amounts of drug concentration and polymer concentration, were prepared by a simple emulsion-crosslinking method. The prepared microspheres' surface was characterised by SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) and evaluated for particle size, entrapment efficiency, production yield, infrared spectroscopic study, in-vitro mucoadhesion, and in-vitro drug release. The results showed that formula 1 is the optimal mucoadhesive microsphere pre...

Antifungal chemosensitization through induction of oxidative stress: A model for control of candidiasis based on the Lippia origanoides essential oil
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 5;96(1):e20230532. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420230532. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn this work, evaluated the antifungal chemosensitizing effect of the Lippia origanoides essential oil (EO) through the induction of oxidative stress. The EO was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-MS. To evaluate the antifungal chemosensitizing effect through induction of oxidative stress, cultures of the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae ∆ycf1 were exposed to sub-inhibitory concentrations of the EO, and the expression of genes known, due be overexpressed in response to oxidative and mutagenic str...

Synthesis of bio-stabilized silver nanoparticles using Roccella montagnei, their anticandidal capacities & amp; potential to inhibit the virulence factors in fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans
AbstractCandida species is the causative agent in approximately 80% of invasive mycoses and drug-resistantCandida albicans is among the four strains of ‘critical priority group’ framed by WHO. Lichens are endowed with some rare phytochemicals and a plethora of therapeutics viz. antifungal capacities ofRoccella montagnei. Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using lichen could offer an eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternative against emerging ‘microbial resistance.’ Therefore, the objective was to biosynthesize silver nanoparticles (Rm-AgNPs) using a Hydro-alcoholic (1:1) extract ofR. montagnei to develo...

In vitro antifungal susceptibility of the dermatophytes: a single center study from Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey
CONCLUSIONS: The most common dermatophytosis agent in our region is T. rubrum. The least antifungal resistance was found against terbinafine. Conducting antifungal susceptibility tests is crucial for selecting effective treatment regimens and early detection of resistance development.PMID:38567576 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202403_35717 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Analysis of candidemia cases in a city hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: As our study observed, the COVID-19 pandemic brought increasing numbers of immunosuppressed patients, widespread use of antibacterials, and central venous catheters, increasing the frequency and mortality of candidemia cases. All health institutions should be prepared for the diagnosis and treatment of candidemia. In addition, C. auris, the frequency of which has increased in recent years, is a new factor that should be considered in candidemia cases.PMID:38567615 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202403_35762 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)
