Drug-Drug Interaction between Tacrolimus and Fluconazole in a Kidney Transplant Recipient
We report a case of tacrolimus and fluconazole drug-drug interaction in a 20-year-old female kidney transplant recipient with stable kidney function. The patient's tacrolimus blood concentrations were in the therapeutic range until fluconazole was administrated for Candida albicans infection, on day 58 posttransplant. Tacrolimus blood concentration increased by 125% (18.4 ng/mL) on day 79 and by 212% (25.4 ng/mL) on day 84 posttransplant. On day 92, tacrolimus trough blood concentration returned to the therapeutic range (5.6 ng/mL), with decrease of tacrolimus daily dose by 50% (to 4 mg). After fluconazole withdrawal, the ...

Selection of ethanol tolerant strains of < i > Candida albicans < /i > by repeated ethanol exposure results in strains with reduced susceptibility to fluconazole
This study identifies a selective pressure that can result in evolution of fluconazole tolerance and resistance without previous exposure to the drug. (Source: PLoS One)

Isolated cryptococcal pleural effusion in a heart transplant recipient: A case report and literature review of pleural fluid adenosine deaminase levels
We report a case of isolated cryptococcal pleural effusion and review its characteristics with reference to pleural fluid adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels. AbstractIsolated cryptococcal pleural effusion is rare as the initial clinical presentation in opportunistic cryptococcal infection. We describe a 59-year-old male heart transplantation recipient who presented with a mononuclear-leukocyte-predominant exudative pleural effusion, with adenosine deaminase levels (ADA) of 37  IU/L and focal pleural nodularity on computed tomography. A thorough evaluation, including pleural fluid culture, cryptococcal antigen, and histolog...

< em > Candida glabrata < /em > oropharyngeal infection in a patient with oral squamous cell carcinoma after COVID-19 infection
CONCLUSION: Risk of fungal infections, such as Candida seems to be high in patients with severe COVID-19, mainly affecting the oral mucosa. However, whether they are directly attributed to COVID-19 or other surrounding factors is unknown.PMID:38361958 | PMC:PMC10864745 | DOI:10.22034/cmm.2023.345120.1478 (Source: Pain Physician)

Nat Prod Res. 2024 Feb 14:1-11. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2315503. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhytochemical characterisation of the polar fraction of Erigeron annuus extract led to the isolation of glycerylerigeroside (1), a unique γ-pyrone derivative. Structure of 1 was decided by intensive study of NMR and mass spectra as 3-O-[4'-((1,3-dihydroxypropan-2-yl)oxy)-β-D-glucopyranoside)]-4H-pyran-4-one, with uncommon glyceroxy side chain attached to 4' position of pyromeconic acid β-D-glucopyranoside. Antimicrobial potential of 1 was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, and Candida albicans. Compo...
