Postintervention Immunological and Entomological Survey of Lymphatic Filariasis in the City of Olinda, Brazil, 2015-2016
This study reports the results of transmission assessment surveys and molecular xenomonitoring in the city of Olinda, RMR, after nearly 15 years (2015-2016) of interventions for LF elimination. Participants were screened for W. bancrofti antigen via immunochromatographic card tests (ICT) in: 1) door-to-door surveys conducted for all children aged 5-7 years from 4 out of 17 intervention areas treated with at least five annual doses of mass drug administration (MDA), and 2) a two-stage cluster sampling survey of residents aged 5 years and older in non-MDA areas. Mosquitoes were collected via handheld aspirators in four MDA a...

Factors influencing implementation of mass drug administration for lymphatic filariasis elimination: a mixed-method study in Odisha, India
Conclusion: There is a need to strengthen MDA, especially in urban areas. An urban-specific strategy, along with surveillance, behavioral change communication, and the involvement of multi-disciplinary teams, is required. (Source: Frontiers in Pharmacology)

Detection of Wuchereria bancrofti DNA in wild caught vector and non-vector mosquitoes: implications for elimination of lymphatic filariasis
CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that non-vectors also harbour W. bancrofti, thus opening an opportunity of using these mosquitoes as surrogate vectors for assessing risk of transmission to humans in LF endemic and post MDA areas.PMID:38329553 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09256-4 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Combinations of the azaquinazoline anti-Wolbachia agent, AWZ1066S, with benzimidazole anthelmintics synergise to mediate sub-seven-day sterilising and curative efficacies in experimental models of filariasis
Lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis are two major neglected tropical diseases that are responsible for causing severe disability in 50 million people worldwide, whilst veterinary filariasis (heartworm) is a potentially lethal parasitic infection of companion animals. There is an urgent need for safe, short-course curative (macrofilaricidal) drugs to eliminate these debilitating parasite infections. We investigated combination treatments of the novel anti-Wolbachia azaquinazoline small molecule, AWZ1066S, with benzimidazole drugs (albendazole or oxfendazole) in up to four different rodent filariasis infection models: Br...

Assessment of microfilaremia in ‘hotspots’ of four lymphatic filariasis endemic districts of Nepal during post-MDA surveillance
by Pramod Kumar Mehta, Mahendra Maharjan BackgroundThe lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination program in all sixty-three endemic districts of Nepal was based on annual mass drug administration (MDA) using a combination of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and albendazole for at least 5 years. The MDA program was started in the Parsa district of the Terai region and at least six rounds of MDA were completed between 2003 and 2017 in all filariasis endemic districts of Central Nepal. Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS) report indicated that circulating filarial antigen (CFA) prevalence was below the critical value i.e., ≤ 2% in sele...

Ending lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis in Africa: Reasons for hope
This year's World Neglected Tropic Diseases (NTD) Day (30 January 2024) comes during a moment of renewed momentum to eliminate NTDs. Two of the NTDs targeted for elimination – lymphatic filariasis (LF) and onchocerciasis (River blindness) – are seeing renewed investment, innovation and importantly, support for local implementing partners. Development and validation of a long-read metabarcoding platform for the detection of filarial worm pathogens of animals and humans
Filarial worms are important vector-borne pathogens of a large range of animal hosts, including humans, and are responsible for numerous debilitating neglected tropical diseases such as, lymphatic filariasis c... (Source: BMC Microbiology)
