Progress towards elimination of onchocerciasis transmission in Mali: A “pre-stop MDA” survey in 18 transmission zones
ConclusionThese data show that onchocerciasis prevalence in the five endemic regions has declined to levels that indicate that Stop-MDA surveys should be now carried out in most of the OTZ except for one in the Kayes Region. This latter site will need additional ivermectin treatment before reevaluation, and an OTZ in the Sikasso Region requires revaluation before possibly reinitiating MDA. Chyluria secondary to disseminated tuberculosis in a 13 ‐year‐old female child: A case report
We report the case of chyluria secondary to disseminated tuberculosis in a 13-year-old female child who presented with passage of white colored urine since 5  months, progressive weight loss for 3 months, abdominal distension for 2 months, generalized swelling of body for 15 days, and pain in abdomen for 10 days. Child had good recovery following treatment with antitubercular drugs. Though chyluria is uncommon in children, tuberculosis could be considered as a differential, after ruling out filariasis. Implementation and Outcomes of a Pilot Collaborative Surgical Hydrocele Training in C ôte d'Ivoire
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Nov 13:tpmd230554. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0554. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease that can cause hydrocele and its associated stigma, loss of economic productivity, and depression. Hydrocele surgery is an essential part of LF morbidity management but can be difficult for national programs to implement. To improve access to hydrocele surgeries in Côte d'Ivoire, we provided a WHO-certified surgical training for six surgical teams from five health districts in Côte d'Ivoire. We then evaluated the surgical outcomes and assessed the impact of hydroce...

Gendered lives, gendered Vulnerabilities: An intersectional gender analysis of exposure to and treatment of schistosomiasis in Pakwach district, Uganda
ConclusionsThe study concludes that vulnerability to schistosomiasis disease and treatment occurred within a complex web of gender relations, culture, poverty, limited economic opportunities and insufficient health services delivery, which together undermined efforts to eliminate schistosomiasis. This study recommends the following: a) increased public health campaigns around schistosomiasis prevention and treatment; b) more regular PZQ MDA at home and schools; c) improved health services delivery and integration of services to include vector control; d) prioritising NTDs; e) providing alternative economic activities; and ...

Mini-TAS as a confirmatory mapping tool for remapping areas with uncertain filarial endemicity to exclude/ include for mass drug administration: A report from field validation in India
by Barsa Baisalini Panda, Kaliannagounder Krishnamoorthy, Arundhuti Das, Hitesh Kumar Jain, Sujata Dixit, Manju Rahi, Nilam Somalkar, Shubhashisha Mohanty, Sanghamitra Pati, Manoranjan Ranjit, Madhusmita Bal India has targeted elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) through mass drug administration (MDA) by 2027. Mapping of LF endemic areas is a priority for implementation of MDA. Current national LF remapping tool for unsurveyed/uncertain districts, have many limitations. The WHO has recommended a s ensitive and rapid remapping protocol (Mini-TAS), that needs validation in Indian setting. Hence, in the present study a c...

A systematic review of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Myanmar
ConclusionThis review summarises NTDs reported in Myanmar over the past 100 years. The findings suggest that most NTDs are likely to be under reported, especially from the majority of the country which is far from academic centres. Research capacity building together with strengthening of laboratory systems would lead to better understanding of the true burden of NTDs in Myanmar. < i > Wuchereria bancrofti < /i > infection is associated with progression to clinical visceral leishmaniasis in VL- endemic areas in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India
ConclusionThis study describes that progression to clinical VL disease is associated with serological evidence of prior infection withW.bancrofti. The integration of disease programs forLeishmania and lymphatic filariasis extend beyond the relationship of sequential or co-infection with disease burden. To ensure elimination targets can be reached and sustained, we suggest areas of co-endemicity would benefit from overlapping vector control activities, health system networks and surveillance infrastructure. Potential mitigating role of ivermectin on the spread of < i > Chlamydia trachomatis < /i > by < i > Musca sorbens < /i >
by Richard Selby, Anita Jeyam, Andrew Tate, Fikreab Kebede, Philip Downs Trachoma is the world ’s most frequent cause of blindness from an infectious agent. The disease caused by infection is associated with lack of access to sanitation and low hygiene standards. Trachoma is controlled through the Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvement (SAFE) strategy, which delivers azithromycin (AZM) mass drug administration (MDA) in endemic areas. The putative vectorMusca sorbens principally reproduce in human faecal matter left in the environment due to open defecation. Ivermectin (IVM) is on the WHO...

Prevalence of zoonotic (brugian) filariasis in Asia: A proportional meta-analysis
This study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of zoonotic brugian filariasis, and to compare the pooled prevalence of brugian filariasis in human and animal populations in the same area based on available studies. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in health-related electronic databases (PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Index Medicus, google scholar). A random-effect meta-analysis of the pooled overall prevalence of filariasis in animal populations was conducted. Sixteen studies from four different Asian countries were identified. Studies were conducted most frequently in Thailand (n = 7), followed by Malaysia (n = ...

A case report on rare finding of microfilaria in pus sample of an ulcer over elephantiasis leg
Direct visualization of microfilaria under microscope from pus sample. Key Clinical MessageSkin ulcerations are a significant cause of morbidity and can be challenging to manage. Among the various causes of chronic non-healing ulcers, lymphedema is also considered a possible diagnosis in countries such as Nepal. Lymphatic filariasis has been a significant public health issue in endemic areas. Wuchereria bancrofti is a common nematode parasite that causes lymphatic filariasis. Excessive retention of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial compartment can cause localized tissue swelling, known as lymphedema, which is caused by i...

Coverage and compliance of mass drug administration (MDA) programme for elimination of lymphatic filariasis in an endemic district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, India
CONCLUSION: Coverage and compliance of MDA in Ghazipur district of U.P., India was found to be below satisfactory levels. Targeted Information Education and Communication (IEC) campaigns focusing on the safety of drugs and the necessity of MDA, and mass mobilization with effective monitoring and supervision is the need of the hour for effective coverage of MDA Programme.PMID:37843242 | DOI:10.4103/0972-9062.374034 (Source: Journal of Vector Borne Diseases)
