An incidental diagnosis of an unusually located echinococcus alveolaris
Indian J Pathol Microbiol. 2023 Nov 9. doi: 10.4103/ijpm.ijpm_285_23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHydatid cyst disease is a zoonotic infection caused by the genus Echinococcus. Hydatid cysts are usually located in the liver or lungs whereas the brain is an unusual location. A 45-year-old male patient was diagnosed with an intracranial mass suggesting a metastasis in the frontal region shown in the cranial computed tomography (CT) scan following a cranial trauma. The histological evaluation revealed an acellular laminated lesion surrounded with reactive changes, compatible with a cuticle. These findings were evaluated in ...

An innovative strategy for deworming dogs in Mediterranean areas highly endemic for cystic echinococcosis
Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, is a zoonotic parasitic disease of economic and public health importance worldwide, especially in the Mediterranean ar... (Source: Parasites and Vectors)

A Rare Pediatric Encounter: Diagnosing and Managing Upward Eye Deviation Due to Maxillary Sinus Hydatid Cyst
AbstractEchinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larval stages of different Echinococcus species, leading to a significant global public health concern. The case report highlights an extremely rare cystic echinococcosis manifestation in an 8-year-old male child's maxilla, causing an upward deviation in his left eye. No previous significant medical history was noted, and a detailed examination uncovered a lesion within the left maxillary sinus. Advanced imaging techniques, including CT and MRI, depicted the cystic nature of the lesion and its impact on adjacent structures. A collaborative surgical interv...

Molecular phylogenetic analysis of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato infecting sheep in Italy
Acta Trop. 2024 Feb 15:107151. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107151. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCystic Echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, is a neglected zoonosis still threatening public health worldwide. In Italy different epidemiological scenarios were reported depending on the geographical area and associated socio-economic activities. Although in northern Italy the occurrence of E. granulosus is considered sporadic, in the southern regions and, particularly in Sardinia, CE prevalence reaches high levels. We analysed CE cysts collected from infected sheep from vari...

Inhibition of AMPK activation in < em > Echinococcus granulosus < /em > sensu stricto limits the parasite's glucose metabolism and survival
In this study, we found that targeted knockdown of EgAMPKα or a small-molecule AMPK inhibitor inhibited the viability of E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) and disrupted the ultrastructure. The results of in vivo experiments showed that the AMPK inhibitor had a significant therapeutic effect on E. granulosus s.s.-infected mice and resulted in the loss of cellular structures of the germinal layer. In addition, the inhibition of the EgAMPK/EgGLUT1 pathway limited glucose uptake and glucose metabolism functions in E. granulosus s.s.. Overall, our results suggest that EgAMPK can be a potential drug target for CE and that inhi...

Difficult to treat liver abscesses in children - Do not forget parasitic infections
We present two children with difficult-to-treat LAs, revealing underlying parasitic infections as the causative agents, implicated by eosinophilia, elevated immunoglobulin-E levels and exposure to domestic animals. In the first case, disseminated echinococcosis was diagnosed through imaging, serology and histopathology. The second case showed a relationship between LAs and Toxocara infection, evidenced by microscopic stool examination of a household cat.PMID:38311934 | DOI:10.1177/00494755241227470 (Source: Tropical Doctor)

Liver and Tropical Infections
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTropical infections may present with primary hepatobiliary manifestations mimicking other liver diseases. Gastroenterologists and hepatologists practicing in endemic regions must be aware of appropriate diagnostic testing and treatment of these infections.Recent FindingsTropical infections like dengue, malaria, scrub typhus, and leptospirosis can mimic viral hepatitis, but certain subtle clues like ongoing fever after the onset of jaundice, hepatomegaly in the setting of acute liver failure-like presentation, preserved coagulation parameters, and multi-system involvement help in suspecting the diag...

Confirmed Autochthonous Case of Human Alveolar Echinococcosis, Italy, 2023
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Feb;30(2):350-353. doi: 10.3201/eid3002.231527.ABSTRACTIn September 2023, a patient in Italy who had never traveled abroad was referred for testing for suspected hepatic cystic echinococcosis. Lesions were incompatible with cystic echinococcosis; instead, autochthonous alveolar echinococcosis was confirmed. Alveolar echinococcosis can be fatal, and awareness must be raised of the infection's expanding distribution.PMID:38270188 | PMC:PMC10826761 | DOI:10.3201/eid3002.231527 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)
