Cardiac Hydatid Cyst: A Rare but Potentially Life-Threatening Presentation of Hydatid Disease
Methodist Debakey Cardiovasc J. 2024 Mar 14;20(2):124-127. doi: 10.14797/mdcvj.1333. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTCardiac echinococcosis is a rare and severe manifestation of hydatid disease. It is caused by parasitic infestation by the Echinococcus species and can lead to life-threatening complications. Diagnosis is difficult due to nonspecific symptoms, but echocardiography is a highly sensitive diagnostic method. Albendazole treatment is effective in managing these cysts and can be an alternative to surgery. A patient with multiple cardiac hydatid cysts was successfully treated with albendazole, highlighting the importance ...

Modulatory actions of Echinococcus granulosus antigen B on macrophage inflammatory activation
Cestodes use own lipid-binding proteins to capture and transport hydrophobic ligands, including lipids that they cannot synthesise as fatty acids and cholesterol. In E. granulosus s.l., one of these lipoproteins is antigen B (EgAgB), codified by a multigenic and polymorphic family that gives rise to five gene products (EgAgB8/1-5 subunits) assembled as a 230 kDa macromolecule. EgAgB has a diagnostic value for cystic echinococcosis, but its putative role in the immunobiology of this infection is still poorly understood. Accumulating research suggests that EgAgB has immunomodulatory properties, but previous studies employed ...

Molecular analyses of exosome-derived miRNAs revealed reduced expression of miR-184-3p and decreased exosome concentration in patients with alveolar echinococcosis
Exp Parasitol. 2024 Mar 13:108734. doi: 10.1016/j.exppara.2024.108734. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBoth E. multilocularis and host-derived exosomes are involved in the pathogenic process of alveolar echinococcosis (AE). Exosomes secrete miRNAs that have regulatory roles in host-pathogen interactions in multiple ways. In the present study, we collected and purified supernatants of E. multilocularis cultures, as well as human plasma exosomes. High-throughput sequencing showed the identities of 45 exosomal miRNAs in E. multilocularis. The lengths of these miRNAs ranged from 19 to 25 nucleotides (nt), with the majority (n = ...

Phenotype and function of MAIT cells in patients with alveolar echinococcosis
In this study, MAIT cells are decreased in peripheral blood and increased in the close-to-lesion liver tissues, especially in areas of fibrosis. Circulating MAIT exhibited activation and exhaustion phenotypes, and intrahepatic MAIT cells showed increased activation phenotypes with increased IFN-γ and IL-17A, and high expression of CXCR5 chemokine receptor. Furthermore, the frequency of circulating MAIT cells was correlated with the size of the lesions and liver function in patients with AE. After excision of the lesion site, circulating MAIT cells returned to normal levels, and the serum cytokines IL-8, IL-12, and IL-18, ...

Assessing the role of individual foxes in environmental contamination with Echinococcus multilocularis through faecal samples
Int J Parasitol. 2024 Mar 7:S0020-7519(24)00053-5. doi: 10.1016/j.ijpara.2024.03.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKey parasite transmission parameters are difficult to obtain from elusive wild animals. For Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis (AE), the red fox is responsible for most of the environmental contamination in Europe. The identification of individual spreaders of E. multilocularis environmental contamination is crucial to improving our understanding of the ecology of parasite transmission in areas of high endemicity and optimising the effectiveness of prevention and contr...
