Confirmed Autochthonous Case of Human Alveolar Echinococcosis, Italy, 2023
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Feb;30(2):350-353. doi: 10.3201/eid3002.231527.ABSTRACTIn September 2023, a patient in Italy who had never traveled abroad was referred for testing for suspected hepatic cystic echinococcosis. Lesions were incompatible with cystic echinococcosis; instead, autochthonous alveolar echinococcosis was confirmed. Alveolar echinococcosis can be fatal, and awareness must be raised of the infection's expanding distribution.PMID:38270188 | PMC:PMC10826761 | DOI:10.3201/eid3002.231527 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Genome-wide transcriptome analysis of Echinococcus multilocularis larvae and germinative cell cultures reveals genes involved in parasite stem cell function
The lethal zoonosis alveolar echinococcosis is caused by tumour-like growth of the metacestode stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis within host organs. We previously demonstrated that metacestode proliferation is exclusively driven by somatic stem cells (germinative cells), which are the only mitotically active parasite cells that give rise to all differentiated cell types. The Echinococcus gene repertoire required for germinative cell maintenance and differentiation has not been characterised so far. We herein carried out Illumina sequencing on cDNA from Echinococcus metacestode vesicles, from metacestode tis...

Epidemiology of < i > Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato < /i > in the Greater Horn of Africa: A systematic review
ConclusionsWe confirm thatE.granulosus s.l. is prevalent throughout the GHA. Nevertheless, despite our efforts to screen grey literature, an accurate assessment of the epidemiology in GHA remains challenging, due to the lack of combined host, in-depth risk factor and behavioural studies, as well as the wide diversity in subpopulations studied and diagnostic tools used. Interdisciplinary and transboundary partnerships would be essential for the design of effective control strategies, tuned to the GHA setting. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Molecular discrimination of G1 and G3 genotypes of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto obtained from human, cattle, and sheep using the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 marker
This study determined the genotype and haplotype differences using the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 gene in hydatid cyst samples. Human (n = 12), cattle (n = 28), and sheep (n = 31) hydatid cyst isolates were included. Seventy-one genomic DNA samples were successfully extracted, and a 759 bp mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 gene fragment was amplified by PCR. Following the sequence analysis, E. granulosus sensu stricto isolates were identified as G1 (n = 61) and G3 (n = 10). A total of 23 haplotypes were obtained from the 71 E. granulosus s.s. G1 and G3 samples. The main haplotype was Hap01 (60.56 %), which consi...

Mitochondrial genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Echinococcus multilocularis in Europe
Int J Parasitol. 2024 Jan 20:S0020-7519(24)00014-6. doi: 10.1016/j.ijpara.2024.01.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe cestode Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis, a fatal zoonotic parasitic disease of the northern hemisphere. Red foxes are the main reservoir hosts and, likely, the main drivers of the geographic spread of the disease in Europe. Knowledge of genetic relationships among E. multilocularis isolates at a European scale is key to understanding the dispersal characteristics of E. multilocularis. Hence, the present study aimed to describe the genetic diversity of E. mult...

Serological surveillance of parasitic zoonoses in 13 highlands regions of Peru: Period 2016-2019
CONCLUSIONS.: From the 7811 samples, we found that these parasitic zoonoses are distributed in 13 regions of the Peruvian highlands, and represent a major health problem, with frequencies that change according to different characteristics.PMID:38232265 | DOI:10.17843/rpmesp.2023.402.12472 (Source: Revista Peruana de Medicina de Experimental y Salud Publica)

Disseminated peritoneal cystic Echinococcosis in a patient with HIV: case report
This report aims to describe a case of multi-cystic peritoneal echinococcosis in a patient under antiviral treatment for HIV for almost ten years, who received albendazole, underwent surgery and progressed favorably. This would be the first Peruvian report of a person with HIV and cystic echinococcosis.PMID:38232271 | DOI:10.17843/rpmesp.2023.402.12479 (Source: Revista Peruana de Medicina de Experimental y Salud Publica)
