Streptomyces sp. 6E3 antimicrobial activity isolated from mineral concentrate.
The objectives of this study were to determine the antimicrobial activity of a culture of Streptomyces sp. 6E3 isolated from minerals against different pathogenic strains, to produce an extract and to estimate the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the fractions against methicillin-resistant Staphylococ cus aureus (MRSA). Streptomyces sp. 6E3 showed antimicrobial activity primarily against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Five of the six fractions presented antimicrobial activity and the most effective gave a MIC of 0.88 ug / mL against S. aureus ATCC 33862, 0.44 ug / mL against S. aureus ATCC 43300 and 1.76 ug / ...

[Cancer immunotherapy: from inception to Nobel Prize].
Authors: Vasquez L, Castro D, León J, Beltrán B Abstract Immunotherapy has meant a great scientific advance in the treatment of cancer in recent years, being considered as the therapeutic cornerstone of some neoplasms. However, in some types of cancer only a fraction of patients achieve benefit, posing the challenges and limitations that lead us to the need to understand the complexity of tumor biology, the microenvironment and the responsiveness of each agent. The results currently exceed what was achieved by conventional chemotherapy, although it is not yet possible to determine whether these respon...

[The electronic cigarette: an emerging public health problem].
We present a narrative review of the EC and its effect on health. Its use is to stop smoking, in which the evidence is low, and ends up being used at the same time as the cigarette they could not quit. In addition, those who never smoked, mainly teenagers and young people, begin consumption. Its use rais es the levels of nicotine, particles, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbo nyls and metals such as aluminum. In vitro, the EC causes inflammation, oxidative stress and is toxic to multiple cell types, including lung, endothelial and stem cells. Produces increased susceptibility to viral and b...

We present the case of a 51-year-old immunocompetent patient with a 2-month history of abdominal pain. Colonoscopy findings showed ileal ulcerations, so studies were carried out to rule out Crohn's disease and intestinal tuberculosis. Later, he developed intestinal obstruction. Exploratory laparotomy found a nodal conglomerate in the mesentery. Anatomical pathology confirmed the diagnosis of primary NKTL on the ileum. Chemotherapy was initiated but the patient asked for voluntary discharge because of his precarious condition. Two months after discharge the patient died. This lymphoma has been reported mainly in Asia and is...

CONCLUSIONS: Patients recognize the importance of treatment; however, they express misconceptions about the pathogenesis of leprosy, and weaknesses in the health system are also identified. These problems would lead to delay in diagnosis and treatment. It is recommended to strengthen control strategies and decentralize the care of leprosy with the participa tion of the community, patients, health personnel and healers, considering the identified barriers and a probable underdiagnosis in women.
