Treatment of Cavernous Transformation of Portal Vein Caused by Hepatic Cystic Echinococcosis Using Ex Vivo Liver Resection and Autotransplantation
CONCLUSIONS Through this paper, we aim to detail the treatment process, showcasing the feasibility and advantages of ELRA. Additionally, we propose a novel approach for the treatment of this disease, while emphasizing the importance of radical resection surgery to prevent long-term complications.PMID:38622855 | DOI:10.12659/AOT.942358 (Source: Annals of Transplantation)

Evaluation of the Protoscolicidal Activity of < em > Humulus lupulus < /em > Methanolic Extracts on < em > Echinococcus granulosus Sensu Stricto < /em >
In conclusion, the methanolic extracts of the H. lupulus varieties Mapuche and Victoria demonstrated a marked in vitro effect against E. granulosus s.s. protoscoleces. The beer-making industry exclusively uses hop cones, leaving behind large amounts of hop leaves as an agricultural by-product that is not being utilized. On the basis of our study, we propose that hop leaves could also be used as a source of secondary metabolites with anthelmintic activity.PMID:38605998 | PMC:PMC11008976 | DOI:10.1155/2024/6251666 (Source: Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine)

sCD155 as a Potential Marker for Diagnosing the Vascular Invasion in Hepatic Alveolar Echinococcosis
CONCLUSION: The sCD155 could be a VI biomarker for HAE. Elevated sCD155 levels are indicative of an increased likelihood of concomitant VI in HAE patients, necessitating a thorough evaluation of vascular impairment and the formulation of individualized management strategies.PMID:38604326 | DOI:10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107203 (Source: Acta Tropica)

Ruptured giant thoracic hydatid cyst presenting with respiratory symptoms
We present the case of a 22-year-old college student who presented with progressive dyspnea, chest pain, fever, cough, and hemoptysis. Imaging revealed a giant cystic lesion and “water lily” sign within the left hemithorax. A giant hydatid cyst was removed by posterolateral thoracotomy. Thorough history, physical examination, and appropriate imaging studies, are crucial for accurate diagnosis. Key messagePulmonary hydatid disease remains a global public health issue. Symptoms often result from cyst rupture, causing fever, cough, and hemoptysis. Radiographs may show homogeneous masses, air-fluid levels, or the pathognom...

Molecular characterization of cystic echinococcosis cysts isolated from cattle in Shiraz, Iran
AbstractCystic echinococcosis (CE), is one of the common parasitic infections of domestic animals and humans caused by the larval stages of the tapewormEchinococcus granulosus. This research aimed to identify of CE cysts in cattle isolates from Shiraz slaughterhouse using molecular technique. Thirty CE cysts isolates were collected and total DNA was extracted from protoscolices or the germinal layer of each cyst followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (NADH-1) mitochondrial genes (~  450 bp) and sequencing. The sequence results were compared with a...

Infectious Diseases of the Brain and Spine
Atypical infections of the brain and spine caused by parasites occur in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed hosts, related to exposure and more prevalently in endemic regions. In the United States, the most common parasitic infections that lead to central nervous system manifestations include cysticercosis, echinococcosis, and toxoplasmosis, with toxoplasmosis being the most common opportunistic infection affecting patients with advanced HIV/AIDS. Another rare but devastating transmittable disease is prion disease, which causes rapidly progressive spongiform encephalopathies. Familiarity and understanding of various infec...
