Complementary feeding practices of caregivers of infants with Down syndrome as compared to caregivers of typically developing infants
Appetite. 2024 Apr 16;198:107356. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107356. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCaregiver feeding practices during the complementary feeding period (6 months-2 years) may be particularly important for infants with Down syndrome (DS) as they are at higher risk for later health conditions (e.g., obesity, diabetes) that can be influenced by early feeding practices. However, how well caregivers of infants with DS are meeting infant feeding evidence-based practices is relatively unknown. Caregivers of infants with DS (N = 75) and caregivers of typically developing (TD) infants (N = 66) aged 0-2 years completed...

Nationwide hospitalizations of patients with down syndrome and congenital heart disease over a 15-year period
Conclusions: A younger age at first admission is a predictor for mortality in patients with Down syndrome and congenital heart disease. If patients undergo more than one admission, the risk of further readmissions increases. There is a pivotal role for heart disease in influencing the hospitalization rate and subsequent mortality. What is Known:•Down syndrome individuals often face an increased risk of congenital heart diseases.•Congenital heart diseases contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality in Down syndrome patients. What is New:•This study analyzes nationwide data covering a 15-year period of pediatric ...

Advancing fetal ultrasound diagnostics: Innovative methodologies for improved accuracy in detecting down syndrome
Med Eng Phys. 2024 Apr;126:104132. doi: 10.1016/j.medengphy.2024.104132. Epub 2024 Mar 2.ABSTRACTThis research work explores the integration of medical and information technology, particularly focusing on the use of data analytics and deep learning techniques in medical image processing. Specifically, it addresses the diagnosis and prediction of fetal conditions, including Down Syndrome (DS), through the analysis of ultrasound images. Despite existing methods in image segmentation, feature extraction, and classification, there is a pressing need to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Our research delves into a comprehensive liter...

Opportunities to Respond During Dyadic Caregiver-Child and Naturalistic Family Interactions Among Children With Down Syndrome: A Preliminary Investigation
CONCLUSION: Our preliminary findings highlight the need for a more nuanced understanding of children's language learning environments to better understand how caregivers support their children's language development.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25579905.PMID:38619451 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00179 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Mitovesicles secreted into the extracellular space of brains with mitochondrial dysfunction impair synaptic plasticity
Hypometabolism tied to mitochondrial dysfunction occurs in the aging brain and in neurodegenerative disorders, including in Alzheimer ’s disease, in Down syndrome, and in mouse models of these conditions. We ha... (Source: Molecular Neurodegeneration)

How do Children with Intellectual Disabilities Empathize in Comparison to Typically Developing Children?
CONCLUSION: These studies have drawn attention to delays or differences in different dimensions of empathy in children with ID and DS, which need to be taken into account in interventions.PMID:38607472 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06340-3 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Adolescents and Adults with Down Syndrome: Results from a Scoping Rapid Review
CONCLUSIONS: While the outcomes of most interventions yielded partial or significant reduction in symptoms, poor research quality and limited generalizability noted across all studies make it difficult to inform guidelines for caring for this high-needs population. In the future, we believe it is necessary to perform more rigorous research focused on treating obsessive compulsive symptoms in individuals with Down syndrome with sufficient follow-up to fully assess treatment effectiveness.PMID:38607470 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06336-z (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)
