Polystyrene nanoplastics synergistically exacerbate diclofenac toxicity in embryonic development and the health of adult zebrafish
In this study, we investigated the possible ecotoxicological effect of co-exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and diclofenac (DCF) in zebrafish (Danio rerio). After six days of exposure, we noticed that the co-exposure to PS-NP (100 μg/L) and DCF (at 50 and 500 μg/L) decreased the hatching rate and increased the mortality rate compared to the control group. Furthermore, we noted that larvae exposed to combined pollutants showed a higher frequency of morphological abnormalities and increased oxidative stress, apoptosis, and lipid peroxidation. In adults, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were also imp...

Harnessing the power of natural deep eutectic solvents (choline chloride/sucrose) and polypropylene glycol in the formation of aqueous biphasic systems and the application of these systems in drug extraction
In this study, we focused on investigating the phase behavior of ABSs composed of poly(propylene) glycol 400 and NADESs (specifically, choline chloride/sucrose with molar ratios of 2 : 1 and 1 : 1). By analyzing the compositions of tie-lines, it was observed that these ABSs, which consist of four components, exhibit characteristics similar to ternary systems. To examine the influence of molar ratios on phase separation, the binodal model was applied to the obtained binodal data. The NRTL and UNIQUAC models were employed to establish correlations for the tie-lines. Moreover, we examined the extraction capabilities of the af...

Durable Effects of Acupuncture for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
AbstractPurpose of ReviewKnee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease which can result in chronic pain and disability. The current interventions available for KOA often fail to provide long-lasting effects, highlighting the need for new treatment options that can offer durable benefits. Previous studies have suggested the efficacy of acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) with its durability remaining uncertain. In this review, we aimed to investigate the durability of the efficacy after completion of treatment.Recent FindingsWe performed thorough searches of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Cen...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1830: Onosma bracteatum Wall Aqueous & ndash;Ethanolic Extract Suppresses Complete Freund & rsquo;s Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis in Rats via Regulation of TNF- & alpha;, IL-6, and C-Reactive Protein
This study aimed to evaluate the anti-arthritic effects of the aqueous–ethanolic extract of O. bracteatum leaves (AeOB) in a rat model of complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis. Rats were treated with AeOB (250, 500, and 750 mg/kg), indomethacin (10 mg/kg), or a vehicle control from days 8 to 28 post-CFA injection. Arthritic score, paw diameter, and body weight were monitored at regular intervals. X-ray radiographs and histopathological analysis were performed to assess arthritic severity. Inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6),...

Physicochemical, structural and biological characterisation of poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) supplemented with diclofenac acid conjugates - Harnessing the potential in the construction of materials for skin regeneration processes
This study involved creating oligomeric conjugates of 3-hydroxy fatty acids and diclofenac, named Dic-oligo(3HAs). Advanced NMR techniques confirmed no free diclofenac in the mix. We tested diclofenac release under conditions resembling healthy and chronic wound skin. These oligomers were used to make P(3HO) blends, forming patches for drug delivery. Their preparation used the solvent casting/porogen leaching (SCPL) method. The patches' properties like porosity, roughness, and wettability were thoroughly analysed. Antimicrobial assays showed that Dic-oligo(3HAs) exhibited antimicrobial activity against reference (S. aureus...

Optimized Design of Quaternary Amino-Functionalized Chitosan Fibers for Ultra-High Diclofenac Adsorption from Wastewater
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 10:141970. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141970. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from water bodies is imperative due to the potential harm to humans and the ecosystem caused by NSAID-contaminated water. Quaternary amino-functionalized epichlorohydrin cross-linked chitosan fibers (QECFs), an economical and eco-friendly adsorbent, were successfully prepared using a simple and gentle method for efficient diclofenac (DCF) adsorption. Additionally, the optimized factors for the preparation of QECFs included epichlorohydrin concentration, pH, ...

Environmental risk assessment of selected pharmaceuticals in hospital wastewater in nothern vietnam
This study investigated the occurrence of selected pharmaceuticals in influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants of 12 hospitals in Hanoi and 3 northern cities of Vietnam during dry and rainy seasons. In addition, environmental risk of pharmaceuticals in both hospital influents and effluents were evaluated based on risk quotients (RQs). Nine selected pharmaceutical compounds including sulfamethoxazole (SMX), naproxen (NPX), diclofenac (DCF), ibuprofen (IBU), acetaminophen (ACT), carbamazepine (CBM), iopromide (IOP), atenolol (ATN), and caffeine (CAF) were frequently detected in most influent and effluent wastewat...
