Survival, cumulative hospital days and infectious complications in urgent-start PD compared with urgent-start HD
CONCLUSIONS: Patient survival, cumulative first-year hospital care days and total KRT-related infection rate at 3 months and 1-year follow-up are similar between urgent-start PD and urgent-start HD patients. Furthermore, CVC insertion rate is associated with incident blood culture-positive bacteraemia and increased cumulative first-year hospital care days.PMID:38661183 | DOI:10.1177/08968608241244939 (Source: Peritoneal Dialysis International)

Correlation Between the 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine Level  in the Peritoneal Solution of Patients Undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis and the Peritoneal Equilibration Test, Kt/V, Ferritin, and Albumin Levels
CONCLUSION: The results of the present study demonstrate that the level of 8OHDG, as one of the oxidative stress markers, could be used to evaluate the function of the peritoneum in patients undergoing PD. Risk Factors and Clinical Characterization of Cardiovascularand Cerebrovascular Events in Elderly Hemodialysis Patients
CONCLUSION: Patients with underlying diseases such as hypertensive or diabetic nephropathy are more likely to experience cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Longer dialysis duration, higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures, elevated uric acid, TC, TG, LDL-C, PTH and blood glucose levels, and boosted inflammatory reaction are risk factors for these events among elderly HD patients. The purpose of this study is to provide practical guidelines for clinical treatment. Comprehensive measures such as active intervention of risk factors, rational drug use and regular examination should be taken to improve the overall...

An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 22;96(1):e20230791. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420230791. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTAlthough control of Covid-19 has improved, the virus continues to cause infections, such as tuberculosis, that is still endemic in many countries, representing a scenario of coinfection. To compare Covid-19 clinical manifestations and outcomes between patients with active tuberculosis infection and matched controls. This is a matched case-control study based on data from the Brazilian Covid-19 Registry, in hospitalized patients aged 18 or over with laboratory confirmed Covid-19 from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022...

Factors associated with post-hospitalization dialysis dependence in ECMO patients who required continuous renal replacement therapy
CONCLUSIONS: AKI requiring CRRT was associated with high mortality in patients receiving ECMO. Nonetheless, most ECMO survivors became dialysis-free before hospital discharge. Variables associated with the need for outpatient dialysis included hyperlipidemia and prolonged need for CRRT during hospitalization.PMID:38655876 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2343810 (Source: Renal Failure)

Ruminant model for hemodialysis cannulation
CONCLUSIONS: The stability of AVF patency and flow underscores the viability and potential of the Caprine species animal model as a valuable research platform for exploring interventions aimed at improving vascular access survival in hemodialysis patients.PMID:38659087 | DOI:10.1177/11297298241247085 (Source: The Journal of Vascular Access)

Physical activity, exercise habits and health-related quality of life in maintenance hemodialysis patients: a multicenter cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified a low level of physical activity, light exercise intensity, and walking as the primary exercise type among the participants. A significant correlation was found between higher physical activity levels, regular exercise, and better HRQOL for maintenance hemodialysis patients. It is advisable to implement strategies to enhance physical activity levels and design exercise programs for maintenance hemodialysis patients based on their real-world physical activity levels and exercise habits.PMID:38658480 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01935-6 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Dialysis Duration, Time Interaction, and Visceral Fat Accumulation: A 6-Year Posttransplantation Study
ConclusionsThe study revealed that KT promoted significant alterations in body composition characterized by increase in the VAT and SAT and a decline in SMR. Notably, dialysis duration and its interaction with posttransplantation duration emerged as significant factors influencing VAT increase. (Source: Clinical and Experimental Nephrology)

Short- and long-term post-nephrectomy outcomes for retroperitoneal liposarcoma from a high-volume sarcoma center: a propensity score matching analysis
CONCLUSIONS: RLPS resection with nephrectomy is related to a mild progression of renal impairment; however, dialysis is rare. En bloc nephrectomy for complete resection of RLPS is safe and improves local control.PMID:38652434 | DOI:10.1007/s10147-024-02530-2 (Source: Cancer Control)

Apparent Mineralocorticoid Excess in Israel: A Case Series and Literature Review
CONCLUSIONS: In this 11-year follow-up report of two Israeli families with AME, patients who presented early maintained long-term normal kidney function, while those who presented late progressed to ESKD. Nevertheless, despite early diagnosis and management, AME is commonly associated with serious complications of the disease or its treatment.PMID:38652803 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae049 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Axillary necklace graft salvage of a locally infected Haemodialysis with Reliable Outflow (HeRO ®) graft
CONCLUSIONS: The originality of this case was the way in which an axillary necklace inflow graft was connected to the pre-existing venous outflow portion of the HeRO® haemodialysis graft system, allowing the excision of the infected inflow graft at the brachial anastomosis. This technique could be viewed as an effective salvage procedure as it allowed the venous outflow portion of the original graft to remain in situ, minimised tissue damage and enabled the patient to swiftly resume haemodialysis without the need for a line.PMID:38653974 | DOI:10.1177/11297298241235866 (Source: The Journal of Vascular Access)
