Risk factors of different mortality periods in older patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing urgent-start peritoneal dialysis: a retrospective observational study
The first six months of therapy represents a high-risk period for peritoneal dialysis (PD) failure. The risk of death in the first six months is higher for older patients treated with urgent-start PD (USPD). H... (Source: BMC Geriatrics)

Changes in bone mineral density in patients with non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease are associated with body composition.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and low bone mineral density (BMD) are highly prevalent and can co-exist. Parameters of mineral metabolism are associated with BMD in CKD, but other contributing factors may contribute. The aim of this study was to assess changes in BMD and its determinants in patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD (NDD-CKD). (Source: Journal of Renal Nutrition)

Non-valvular atrial fibrillation in patients on peritoneal dialysis, prevalence, treatment and professionals involved
The objective of our study was to know the prevalence, treatment and professionals involved in the management of atrial fibrillation in peritoneal dialysis patients. For this purpose, we performed a descriptive analysis through a survey sent to different peritoneal dialysis units in Spain. A total of 1,403 patients on peritoneal dialysis were included in the study, of whom 186 (13.2%) had non-valvular atrial fibrillation. In addition, the assessment of the scores of thromboembolic and bleeding risks for the indication of oral anticoagulation was mainly carried out by the cardiologist (60% of the units), as well as its pres...

Exploring kidney dialysis costs in the United States: a scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that prevention of or delay in progression to ESRD could have considerable cost savings for Medicare and private payers, particularly in patients with high-risk conditions such as type 2 diabetes. More efficient use of resources is needed, including low-cost medication, to improve clinical outcomes and lower overall costs, especially in high-risk groups. Widening access to PD where it is safe and appropriate may help to reduce dialysis costs.PMID:38605648 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2342210 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Accuracy of physical examination versus Doppler ultrasonography for determining maturity in postoperative arteriovenous fistula formation
CONCLUSION: Although a prudent physician predicts AVF maturation through a thorough physical examination, Doppler ultrasonography is preferred in anticipating the success of postoperative AVF placement.PMID:38609821 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2024.03.176 (Source: Asian Journal of Surgery)

Risk factors and outcomes in patients who switched from peritoneal dialysis to physician-oriented or patient-oriented kidney replacement therapy
CONCLUSION: Compared to patient-oriented KRT conversion, PD patients who underwent physician-oriented conversion had higher risks of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. Factors included age at catheterization, education level, annual household income, and history of diabetes mellitus.PMID:38604972 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2337286 (Source: Renal Failure)

Minimizing delays to hemodialysis access maturation: A quality improvement analysis
CONCLUSION: Preoperative vein mapping contributed up to 21% of referral to maturation times but was not associated with increased tunneled catheter duration. While tunneled catheter placement impacted access maturation it did not cause additional pre-operative delays. Earlier referrals for access creation and reduction of outpatient wait-time from referral to OR and increased AV graft placement may minimize catheter days in our system thereby mitigating the added delays caused by pre-operative vein mapping.PMID:38602233 | DOI:10.1177/11297298241244509 (Source: The Journal of Vascular Access)
