Clinical, Epidemiological, and Laboratory Features of Mayaro Virus Infection: a Systematic Review
AbstractPurpose of ReviewMayaro virus is an arbovirus that circulates in a wild cycle transmitted byHaemagogus janthinomys; however, case reports in urban areas suggest that other arthropods could be acting as vectors. It shares several similarities with Chikungunya virus, being highly probable that many cases are being misdiagnosed. The disease caused by this pathogen is known as Mayaro fever, which is restricted to regions of Central and South America, mainly the Amazon rainforest. Cases of Mayaro fever have continuously been increasing, suggesting that Mayaro virus would become another major epidemic arbovirus in Americ...

Mitochondrial protein BNIP3 regulates Chikungunya virus replication in the early stages of infection
by Liliana Echavarria-Consuegra, Nilima Dinesh Kumar, Marleen van der Laan, Mario Mauthe, Denise Van de Pol, Fulvio Reggiori, Jolanda M. Smit Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a human pathogen causing outbreaks of febrile illness for which vaccines and specific treatments remain unavailable. Autophagy-related (ATG) proteins and autophagy receptors are a set of host factors that participate in autophagy, but have also shown to function in other unrelated cellular pathways. Although autophagy is reported to both inhibit and enhance CHIKV replication, the specific role of individual ATG proteins remains largely unknown. Here, a s...

Synergistic In Vitro Antiviral Effect of Combinations of Ivermectin, Essential Oils, and 18-(Phthalimid-2-yl)ferruginol against Arboviruses and Herpesvirus
Pharmaceuticals (Basel). 2023 Nov 13;16(11):1602. doi: 10.3390/ph16111602.ABSTRACTCombining antiviral drugs with different mechanisms of action can help prevent the development of resistance by attacking the infectious agent through multiple pathways. Additionally, by using faster and more economical screening methods, effective synergistic drug candidates can be rapidly identified, facilitating faster paths to clinical testing. In this work, a rapid method was standardized to identify possible synergisms from drug combinations. We analyzed the possible reduction in the antiviral effective concentration of drugs already ap...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2298: Viral RNA in Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) Collected between 2019 and 2021 in Germany
Helge Kampen Due to globalisation and climate change, mosquito-borne pathogens are emerging in new areas on all continents, including Europe, which has recently faced outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya and West Nile fever. The present study complements previous investigations to evaluate the circulation of mosquito-borne viruses in Germany, with the aim of identifying potential vector species and risk areas. Mosquitoes collected from 2019 to 2021 and identified to species or species group level were screened for viruses of the families Flaviviridae, Peribunyaviridae and the genus Alphavirus of the family Togaviridae. In ...

Development and pre-clinical evaluation of a Zika virus diagnostic for low resource settings
DiscussionContrary to conventional RT-qPCR, our Iso-ZIKV-Dx does not require expensive machinery, specialised laboratory settings or extensively trained personnel. Pre-clinical evaluation demonstrates that our test exhibits robust, in-field capabilities without compromising sensitivity or specificity. When compared to the gold-standard RT-qPCR, our Iso-ZIKV-Dx test offers an array of applications that extend beyond diagnostics alone, including potential for surveillance and monitoring of ZIKV vector competency. Viral infections and pathogenesis of glaucoma: a comprehensive review
Clin Microbiol Rev. 2023 Nov 15:e0005723. doi: 10.1128/cmr.00057-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSUMMARYGlaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, caused by the gradual degeneration of retinal ganglion cells and their axons. While glaucoma is primarily considered a genetic and age-related disease, some inflammatory conditions, such as uveitis and viral-induced anterior segment inflammation, cause secondary or uveitic glaucoma. Viruses are predominant ocular pathogens and can impose both acute and chronic pathological insults to the human eye. Many viruses, including herpes simplex virus, varicella-z...

nçois Xavier Babin Tahinamandranto Rasamoelina Eric Delaporte Luc Hervé Samison Martine Peeters Eric Nerrienet Ahidjo Ayouba To estimate the prevalence of IgG antibodies against six arboviruses in people living with HIV-1 (PLWHIV) in Madagascar, we tested samples collected between January 2018 and June 2021. We used a Luminex-based serological assay to detect IgG antibodies against antigens from Dengue virus serotypes 1–4 (DENV1–4), Zika virus (ZIKV), West Nile virus (WNV), Usutu virus (USUV), Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), and O’nyong nyong virus (ONNV). "What will the doctor give me, the same painkiller?": a qualitative study exploring health-care seeking and symptoms self-management among patients for the treatment of long-term chikungunya disease, in Cura çao
CONCLUSIONS: To promote the benefits of long-term health-care seeking and subsequently reduce the possible harmful use of analgesics, a collaborative physician-patient therapeutic relationship need to be encouraged. To facilitate this, important shifts may be needed in chikungunya sequalae education of both patients and health-care professionals, and policy makers need to revise health systems for the long-term provision of multidisciplinary care to achieve beneficial health outcomes in long-term chikungunya disease.PMID:37957621 | DOI:10.1186/s12913-023-10254-8 (Source: Pain Physician)
