Demand forecasting for platelet usage: From univariate time series to multivariable models
This study is the first to utilize different methods from statistical time series models to data-driven regression and machine learning techniques for platelet transfusion using clinical predictors and with different amounts of data. We find that the multivariable approaches have the highest accuracy in general, however, if sufficient data are available, a simpler time series approach appears to be sufficient. We also comment on the approach to choose predictors for the multivariable models. (Source: PLoS One)

A Longitudinal Investigation of Lower-Risk Gambling Limits in the Canadian National Study
AbstractRecent years have seen increased attention given to identifying and describing the levels of gambling participation that confer a risk of harm in order to generate public health advice regarding lower-risk gambling. However, most of the existing literature has failed to explicitly assess these limits in a prospective manner. The purpose of this study is to employ a methodology consistent with prior investigations to evaluate the level of gambling participation associated with an increased risk of future gambling-related harm. Using data from the Alberta Gambling Research Institute ’s National Project Online Panel...

Clinical outcomes and treatment patterns in adults with FLT3-ITDmut+ acute myeloid leukemia undergoing allogeneic hemopoietic cell transplantation in the US and Canada
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is considered a genetically heterogeneous disease, with different AML subtypes associated with distinct outcomes.1 Internal tandem duplications of the FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) gene (FLT3-ITD) are present in approximately 25% of patients with AML and are associated with higher rates of relapse and shorter overall survival.2,3 In these patients, allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) represents a potentially curative treatment option.4 (Source: Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation)

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 655: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Hepatitis C Treatment Initiation in British Columbia, Canada: An Interrupted Time Series Study
n Naveed Zafar Janjua We investigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on hepatitis C (HCV) treatment initiation, including by birth cohort and injection drug use status, in British Columbia (BC), Canada. Using population data from the BC COVID-19 Cohort, we conducted interrupted time series analyses, estimating changes in HCV treatment initiation following the introduction of pandemic-related policies in March 2020. The study included a pre-policy period (April 2018 to March 2020) and three follow-up periods (April to December 2020, January to December 2021, and January to December 2022). The level of HCV treatm...

Evaluating the impact of a national geriatric mental health ECHO educational program on healthcare providers' practice
This study describes a Canada-wide National ECHO pilot project in the area of geriatric mental health and reports on the program's impact on providers' care practices. A mixed-methods approach was used to analyze surveys completed by participating healthcare providers. Program evaluation measured satisfaction, achievement of learning objectives, awareness of issues related to geriatric mental health, and comfort and self-efficacy working with older adults. The program led to a statistically significant increase in participants' awareness of issues related to support for older adults with mental illness and comfort and self...

Anti-Black Medical Gaslighting in Healthcare: Experiences of Black Women in Canada
CONCLUSIONS: Anti-Black medical gaslighting contributes to differential access to treatment and care. Improving equitable access to treatment and care must involve addressing structural and epistemic biases in healthcare and fostering a culture of listening to humanize the experience of illness.PMID:38644764 | DOI:10.1177/08445621241247865 (Source: The Canadian Journal of Nursing Research)

Leaving emergency departments without completing treatment among First Nations and non-First Nations patients in Alberta: a mixed-methods study
CMAJ. 2024 Apr 21;196(15):E510-E523. doi: 10.1503/cmaj.231019.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Our previous research showed that, in Alberta, Canada, a higher proportion of visits to emergency departments and urgent care centres by First Nations patients ended in the patient leaving without being seen or against medical advice, compared with visits by non-First Nations patients. We sought to analyze whether these differences persisted after controlling for patient demographic and visit characteristics, and to explore reasons for leaving care.METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study, including a population-based retrospective cohort ...
