Updated Analysis of Radon Exposure and Lung Cancer Mortality in the Cohort of Newfoundland Fluorspar Miners (1950-2016)
Radiat Res. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1667/RADE-23-00114.1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe commercial mining of fluorspar in St. Lawrence Newfoundland began in 1933. Miners who worked underground were exposed to high levels of radon progeny, especially before ventilation was introduced into the mines in 1960. The mean cumulative radon exposure for underground miners in this cohort was 380.9 working level months (WLM). A series of studies of this cohort have characterized the increased risks of lung cancer mortality due to radon. We have extended the follow-up of this cohort an additional 15 years to provide additional insigh...

The potential for current sodium and potassium production to support a global switch to the use of potassium-enriched salt: a desktop research study
CONCLUSIONS: Significant up-scaling of the production of potassium chloride and the capacity of companies able to manufacture potassium-enriched salt, as well as a robust business case for the switch to potassium chloride, would be required.PMID:38644629 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980024000922 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Transitioning to a guaranteed annual income and the impact on activities of daily living in older adults: Evidence from public pensions in Canada using the CLSA
CONCLUSION: Our results could provide evidence for the potential health benefits of more comprehensive guaranteed annual income programs beyond the pension program. The penalty of being low-income was mitigated by the stability of the pension income in terms of ADL improvement or degradation.PMID:38647638 | DOI:10.17269/s41997-024-00875-9 (Source: Canadian Journal of Public Health)

Evaluating the impact of a national geriatric mental health ECHO educational program on healthcare providers' practice
This study describes a Canada-wide National ECHO pilot project in the area of geriatric mental health and reports on the program's impact on providers' care practices. A mixed-methods approach was used to analyze surveys completed by participating healthcare providers. Program evaluation measured satisfaction, achievement of learning objectives, awareness of issues related to geriatric mental health, and comfort and self-efficacy working with older adults. The program led to a statistically significant increase in participants' awareness of issues related to support for older adults with mental illness and comfort and self...

The relationship between relational continuity and family physician follow-up after an antidepressant prescription in older adults: a retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings do not provide strong evidence of a relationship between relational continuity of care and higher quality management of antidepressant prescriptions. However, the relationship is slightly more pronounced in rural communities where access to continuous primary care and specialized mental health services is more limited. This may support the ongoing need for the recruitment and retention of primary care providers in rural communities.PMID:38649823 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02361-0 (Source: Primary Care)

Leaving emergency departments without completing treatment among First Nations and non-First Nations patients in Alberta: a mixed-methods study
CMAJ. 2024 Apr 21;196(15):E510-E523. doi: 10.1503/cmaj.231019.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Our previous research showed that, in Alberta, Canada, a higher proportion of visits to emergency departments and urgent care centres by First Nations patients ended in the patient leaving without being seen or against medical advice, compared with visits by non-First Nations patients. We sought to analyze whether these differences persisted after controlling for patient demographic and visit characteristics, and to explore reasons for leaving care.METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study, including a population-based retrospective cohort ...
