Development and evolution of nuclear cardiology and cardiac PET in Canada
Gated radionuclide angiography and myocardial perfusion imaging were developed in the United States and Europe in the 1970 ’s and soon adopted in Canadian centers. Much of the early development of nuclear cardiology in Canada was in Toronto, Ontario and was quickly followed by new programs across the country. Clinical research in Canada contributed to the further development of nuclear cardiology and cardiac PET.The C anadian Nuclear Cardiology Society (CNCS) was formed in 1995 and became the Canadian Society of Cardiovascular Nuclear and CT Imaging (CNCT) in 2014. Advocating for population health: The role of public health practitioners in the age of artificial intelligence
Can J Public Health. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.17269/s41997-024-00881-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOver the past decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has begun to transform Canadian organizations, driven by the promise of improved efficiency, better decision-making, and enhanced client experience. While AI holds great opportunities, there are also near-term impacts on the determinants of health and population health equity that are already emerging. If adoption is unregulated, there is a substantial risk that health inequities could be exacerbated through intended or unintended biases embedded in AI systems. New economic op...

The transition of general practice into an academic discipline: tracing the origins through the first four professors in general practice/family medicine
Scand J Prim Health Care. 2024 Apr 16:1-10. doi: 10.1080/02813432.2024.2335537. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBeing the 'mother' of most clinical specialties, general practice is as old as medicine itself. However, as a recognized academic discipline within medical schools, general practice has a relatively short life span. A decisive step forward was taken in 1956 when the University of Edinburgh established its Department of General Practice, and appointed the world's inaugural professor in the field in 1963. During the 1960s, the pioneering move in Edinburgh was followed by universities in the Netherlands (University of...

Factors that influence scope-of-practice decisions of early-career family physicians: Focus group study in Canada
CONCLUSION: Decisions about scope of practice by early-career family physicians are highly influenced by personal factors followed by organizational, educational, community, and system factors. These findings suggest numerous strategies are needed to increase individuals' interest in providing comprehensive care in Canada. Educators should cultivate interest in comprehensive care among learners, strategically recruit trainees, provide targeted exposure and experiences, ensure competence and confidence are evaluated throughout and at the end of training, and introduce formal mentorship programs. Policy-makers should invest ...

Barriers and facilitators for family physicians prescribing opioid agonist therapy in Saskatchewan
CONCLUSION: Despite the presence of several real and perceived barriers limiting OAT prescribing by Saskatchewan family physicians, there are family physicians interested in providing this therapy. Increased clinical resources and support, including increased interdisciplinary practice, are actionable steps that should be considered by policy decision makers to address this issue. Additionally, increased OUD and OAT education, which includes the perspectives of those with lived experience of OUD, would help address physician confidence, knowledge, and awareness in this area.PMID:38626996 | DOI:10.46747/cfp.7004e52 (Source:...
