Honey bee stressor networks are complex and dependent on crop and region
Curr Biol. 2024 Apr 15:S0960-9822(24)00379-8. doi: 10.1016/j.cub.2024.03.039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHoney bees play a major role in crop pollination but have experienced declining health throughout most of the globe. Despite decades of research on key honey bee stressors (e.g., parasitic Varroa destructor mites and viruses), researchers cannot fully explain or predict colony mortality, potentially because it is caused by exposure to multiple interacting stressors in the field. Understanding which honey bee stressors co-occur and have the potential to interact is therefore of profound importance. Here, we used the e...

Midurethral Sling with Concomitant Sacrocolpopexy: Does the Sequence Matter? A Retrospective Cohort Study
The objective is to determine if the timing of midurethral sling (MUS) placement has an impact on the recurrence rate of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients that underwent robot sacrocolpopexy (RSC) with MUS placement at a large community hospital. Our data demonstrated that there was no significant difference in SUI recurrence when the MUS was placed before or after the RSC (15% vs. 11%, P = 0.41, respectively). We concluded that physician preference may dictate surgical approach to sequence of retropubic MUS placement at the time of RSC.PMID:38636804 | DOI:10.1016/j.jo...

Longitudinal Study of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins along Canada's Coast
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 16:118944. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118944. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParalytic shellfish toxins (PST) in shellfish products have led to severe risks to human health. To monitor the risk, the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program has been collecting longitudinal PST measurements in blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) samples in six coastal provinces of Canada. The spatial distributions of major temporal variation patterns were studied via Functional Principal Component Analysis. Seasonal increases in PST contamination were found to vary the most in terms of magnitude ...

An event-related potential investigation of the influence of bilingualism on disambiguating homonyms in older adults
Can J Exp Psychol. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1037/cep0000331. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAmbiguity is ubiquitous in language; lexical ambiguity refers to instances where a single word has multiple meanings. The current investigation examined homonyms, words that have the same orthography and pronunciation in English but multiple meanings (e.g., BANK, meaning "financial institution" or "river's edge"). The processing of homonyms requires the engagement of executive control processes, for example, to select the appropriate meaning of the homonym while reducing interference from other meanings. Executive function processes are ...

Asthma patients' and physicians' perspectives on the burden and management of asthma: post-hoc analysis of APPaRENT 1 and 2 to assess predictors of treatment adherence
CONCLUSIONS: Results revealed an important disconnect between patient and physician treatment goals and treatment adherence, suggesting that strategies for improving patient adherence to maintenance medication are needed, focusing on younger patients with milder disease. High reliever use despite good adherence may indicate poor disease control. Personalised care considering patient characteristics alongside physician training in motivational communication and shared decision-making could improve patient management and outcomes.PMID:38636683 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107637 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Factors associated with plans for early retirement among Ontario family physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Over 20% of Ontario FP respondents were considering retiring earlier by the third-wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Supporting FPs in their clinical and non-clinical roles, such that they feel able to provide good care and that their work is valued, reducing non-clinical (e.g., administrative) responsibilities, dealing with pandemic-related fears, and supporting infection control practices and personal protective equipment acquisition in clinic, particularly in those aged 50 years or older may help increase family physician retention during future pandemics.PMID:38637731 | PMC:PMC11025226 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024...

Comparison of flanged polypropylene scleral intraocular lens fixation with scleral sutured fixation
CONCLUSION: Comparison of scleral IOL fixations performed with the recently developed flange technique to the conventional Hoffman scleral pocket technique resulted in similar visual outcomes and less myopization. There were more complications in the newly adopted flange technique, which may be related to the higher rate of combined anterior vitrectomy and pars plana vitrectomy. The flange technique is effective, with a shorter learning curve and similar surgical time. Therefore, it can become a viable method for scleral IOL fixation in the absence of zonular support.PMID:38636552 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2024.03.014 (Source: ...

Co-Development of Three Dietary Indices to Facilitate Dietary Intake Assessment of Pediatric Crohn's Disease Patients
Can J Diet Pract Res. 2024 Apr 18:1-8. doi: 10.3148/cjdpr-2024-005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiterature on dietary behaviours of the pediatric Crohn's Disease (CD) population and the relationship between dietary intake and CD activity is limited. Three dietary indices were developed and tested to conduct dietary pattern analysis in pediatric patients with CD consuming a free diet following remission induction via exclusive enteral nutrition (n = 11). Index scores underwent descriptive and inferential analysis. The mean adjusted scores (out of 100) for the Pediatric Western Diet Index, Pediatric Prudent Diet Index, and...

Immigration Status and Breast Cancer Surgery Quality of Care Metrics: A Population-Level Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We observed differences in measures of socioeconomic disadvantage and disease characteristics between immigrant and Canadian-born women with breast cancer. Upon adjusting for these factors, no differences emerged in rate of surgery, rate of BCS, and time to surgery. The lack of disparity suggests barriers to accessing basic components of breast cancer care may be mitigated by the universal healthcare system in Canada.PMID:38637444 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15250-8 (Source: Ann Oncol)
