Nonclinical factors affecting intraoperative red blood cell transfusion: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: Our systematic review has synthesized the literature on nonclinical and behavioural factors impacting intraoperative transfusion decision-making, categorized using the TDF. These findings can inform evidence-based interventions to reduce intraoperative RBC transfusion variability.STUDY REGISTRATION: Open Science Framework ( https://osf.io/pm8zs/?view_only=166299ed28964804b9360c429b1218c1 ; first posted, 3 August 2022).PMID:38509437 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-024-02739-9 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

The influence of health service interactions and local policies on vaccination decision-making in immigrant women: A multi-site Canadian qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Given our participants' different communication preferences and needs, we argue that a one-size-fits-all communication approach is inappropriate for immigrant and refugee populations. Instead, multi-pronged communication strategies are required to reach participants and respond to previous experiences and information that may lead to vaccination hesitancy.PMID:38514354 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.014 (Source: Vaccine)

Epigenetic regulation of hepatocellular carcinoma progression: microRNAs as therapeutic, diagnostic and prognostic factors
Int J Biochem Cell Biol. 2024 Mar 19:106566. doi: 10.1016/j.biocel.2024.106566. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a significant challenge for public healthcare systems in developed Western countries including the USA, Canada, and the UK, is influenced by different risk factors including hepatitis virus infections, alcoholism, and smoking. The disruption in the balance of microRNAs (miRNAs) plays a vital function in tumorigenesis, given their function as regulators in numerous signaling networks. These miRNAs, which are mature and active in the cytoplasm, work by reducing the expression of target...

Exploring the personal stroke and rehabilitation experiences of older adults with chronic stroke during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative descriptive study
CONCLUSIONS: One unique finding was that the participants used this study as an opportunity to teach and advocate for future stroke survivors which is not often seen in qualitative stroke rehabilitation research. Future stroke research should place emphasis on both the positive and negative experiences of this population.PMID:38511399 | DOI:10.1080/17482631.2024.2331431 (Source: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being)

Clinical Insights Into the Use of Speech Amplification Devices for Managing Hypophonia: Interviews With Speech-Language Pathologists
CONCLUSIONS: The insights provided by the SLP participants help to understand the clinical decisions that are made when determining device candidacy, selecting a device, and evaluating device success. These insights can be used to improve research studies of augmentative management of hypophonia and guide more personalized management decisions.PMID:38512013 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00396 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Aging Parents and the Ties That Bind: Intergenerational Relationship Quality Among Culturally Diverse Canadian Families
Int J Aging Hum Dev. 2024 Mar 20:914150241240120. doi: 10.1177/00914150241240120. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDrawing from a life course perspective, this paper examines mid/later-life parent-child relationship quality among ethnically diverse families. Focus is on the role of culture, child, and parental characteristics. Data are drawn from a study of 588 parents aged 50+ of a least one child aged 19-35 who reside in Metro Vancouver, B.C. from four Canadian cultural groups: British, Chinese, Persian/Iranian, and South Asian. Using OLS regression methods, we use two dependent variable scales: positive and negative suppor...

T1D and T2D predispose to higher Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates following cataract surgery: analysis of 53,471 consecutive cases
CONCLUSION: In our large cohort study, patients with T1D and T2D were predisposed to high risk for Nd:YAG capsulotomy following cataract surgery. This study may be beneficial and raise awareness regarding the assessment of posterior capsular opacification development in pseudophakic diabetic patients, particularly those with T1D. The significance of ophthalmology screening for diabetes individuals is further supported by this issue.PMID:38513717 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2024.02.014 (Source: Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology)

Validation of preloaded DMEK donor tissues: a laboratory-based study on endothelial cell viability and comparison of two F-mark inks
CONCLUSION: Preloaded DMEK donor tissues resulted in an acceptable ECL range after 1 and 5 days of storage and were deemed suitable for transplantation. Both F-mark inks are acceptable for prestamping preloaded DMEK tissues prior to surgical transplantation with comparable ECL and intensities.PMID:38513716 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2024.02.012 (Source: Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology)
