News at a glance: Long-awaited malaria shots, risks of face recognition technology, and Japan ’s first moon landing
GLOBAL HEALTH Long-awaited malaria shots rolled out After a 60-year quest, the first-ever routine childhood malaria vaccinations—those given as part of the regular immunization schedule—were administered to infants and toddlers in Cameroon on 22 January. They received RTS,S or Mosquirix, made by GlaxoSmithKline and approved for general use in 2021 by the World Health Organization (WHO). The vaccine’s efficacy wanes substantially over time, but a 4-year pilot rollout required by WHO in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi showed it slashed illness and death in young children. Nineteen other African countrie...

Clothianidin-resistant Anopheles gambiae adult mosquitoes from Yaound é, Cameroon, display reduced susceptibility to SumiShield® 50WG, a neonicotinoid formulation for indoor residual spraying
Chronic exposure of mosquito larvae to pesticide residues and cross-resistance mechanisms are major drivers of tolerance to insecticides used for vector control. This presents a concern for the efficacy of clo... (Source: BMC Infectious Diseases)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 243: Human Papillomavirus Types and Cervical Cancer Screening among Female Sex Workers in Cameroon
Conclusion: The prevalence of HPV infection among FSWs in Cameroon is higher than the worldwide pooled FSW prevalence. HPV types 51 and 53 were the most prevalent, while types 18 and 16 were the least prevalent. HIV status was the only variable that was significantly associated with infection with HPV. Prevalence, clinical presentation, and risk factors of chronic venous disease in Cameroon: A general population-based study
CONCLUSION: Chronic venous disease is frequent in Cameroon and main traditional cardiovascular risk factors are associated to this condition. Systematic screening of the CVD in these specific groups could reduce the burden of the disease and its economic impact.PMID:38158837 | DOI:10.1177/02683555231224111 (Source: Phlebology)

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 209: mid-DeepLabv3 : A Novel Approach for Image Semantic Segmentation Applied to African Food Dietary Assessments+
ri Recent decades have witnessed the development of vision-based dietary assessment (VBDA) systems. These systems generally consist of three main stages: food image analysis, portion estimation, and nutrient derivation. The effectiveness of the initial step is highly dependent on the use of accurate segmentation and image recognition models and the availability of high-quality training datasets. Food image segmentation still faces various challenges, and most existing research focuses mainly on Asian and Western food images. For this reason, this study is based on food images from sub-Saharan Africa, which pose their o...

A detailed characterization of drug resistance during darunavir/ritonavir monotherapy highlights a high barrier to the emergence of resistance mutations in protease but identifies alternative pathways of resistance
ConclusionsThe study highlights the high resistance barrier of ritonavir-boosted darunavir while identifying alternative pathways of resistance through Gag substitutions. During virological suppression, resistance patterns in HIV-1 DNA reflect treatment history, but due to technical and biological considerations, cautious interpretation is warranted. Co-infection with malaria and intestinal parasites and its association with anemia in children (zero to ten years old) in tiko subdivision, cameroon
This study determined the prevalence of co-infection with malaria and intestinal parasitic infections and determined its association with anemia in children (0-10 yr) in Tiko, Cameroon. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was carried out whereby venous blood and stool samples were collected from 377 febrile children. Blood was used to perform a full blood count. Thick and thin blood films were prepared and stained with Giemsa for malaria parasite diagnosis. The formol ether concentration technique was used to analyze the stools. Pearson's chi-square test, Student's t-test, and other statistical analyses were performed. ...

Clinical Outreach Training and Supportive Supervision Quality-of-Care Analysis: Impact of Readiness Factors on Health Worker Competencies in Malaria Case Management in Cameroon, Mali, and Niger
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Dec 26:tpmd230479. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0479. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImproving the quality of malaria clinical case management in health facilities is key to improving health outcomes in patients. The U.S. President's Malaria Initiative Impact Malaria Project has supported implementation of the outreach training and supportive supervision (OTSS) approach in 11 African countries to improve the quality of malaria care in health facilities through the collection and analysis of observation-based data on health facility readiness and health provider competency in malaria case management. We cond...

Use of Supervision Data to Improve Quality of Care for Malaria in Pregnancy: Experience in Six African Countries
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Dec 26:tpmd230206. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0206. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMalaria in pregnancy (MiP) intervention coverage, especially intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp), lags behind other global malaria indicators. In 2020, across Africa, only 32% of eligible pregnant women received at least three IPTp doses, despite high antenatal care attendance. We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected during outreach, training, and supportive supervision visits from 2019 to 2020 to assess quality of care and explore factors contributing to providers' competence in providing IPTp...
