Hepatitis E virus infections among patients with acute febrile jaundice in two regions of Cameroon: First molecular characterization of hepatitis E virus genotype 4
ConclusionOur results showed that HEV is one of the causes of acute febrile jaundice in patients enrolled in the yellow fever surveillance program in two regions of Cameroon. We described the circulation of three HEV genotypes, including two zoonotic genotypes. Further studies will be important to elucidate the transmission routes of these zoonotic HEV genotypes to humans in Cameroon. (Source: PLoS One)

Injury prevention and health protection strategy in Cameroon University athletes (PhD Academy Award)
What did I do? The aim of my PhD was to investigate musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses in Cameroon University athletes in order to inform prevention strategies and rehabilitation measures. Like other sport competitions worldwide, the Cameroon University Games (CUG) was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the economic, infrastructural, educational and social realities in Cameroon, and because return to competition was challenging in terms of infection and injury risks, the tournament was postponed from the 2019 edition to 2023. In this regard, I proposed a specific contextualised injury risk mitigation protocol an...

Concurrent Clade I and Clade II Monkeypox Virus Circulation, Cameroon, 1979-2022
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Feb 7;30(3). doi: 10.3201/eid3003.230861. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring 1979-2022, Cameroon recorded 32 laboratory-confirmed mpox cases among 137 suspected mpox cases identified by the national surveillance network. The highest positivity rate occurred in 2022, indicating potential mpox re-emergence in Cameroon. Both clade I (n = 12) and clade II (n = 18) monkeypox virus (MPXV) were reported, a unique feature of mpox in Cameroon. The overall case-fatality ratio of 2.2% was associated with clade II. We found mpox occurred only in the forested southern part of the country, and MPXV phylogeograph...

A structured approach to effective mentoring of women health researchers in Africa
CONCLUSIONS: Mentorship programs can help over time to bridge the gender gaps within Africa as well as the gaps between African-led research and the rest of the world while making a meaningful contribution to enhancing the quality, diversity, and productivity of researchers. A mentoring program such as the HIGHER Women MPP can be improved by leveraging local and international partners to foster the mentoring program's sustainability, scalability, and expanded reach.FUNDING: World Health Organization's Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (WHO/TDR) and Canada's International Development Research ...

Health policy and systems research capacity development to support maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health in West and Central Africa
CONCLUSIONS: Lessons for health policy and systems research capacity building in LMIC include the potential of South-South partnerships, the need for dedicated resources, the potential of Sub-regional health organizations to support capacity building and recognition that each effort builds on preceding efforts of others, and that it is important to explore and understand where the energy and momentum for change lies.FUNDING: The work described here has been funded by IDRC Canada under research grant # 108237 "West and Central African partnership for maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health research."PMID:38322739 | ...

Global pediatric anesthesia-Anglophone West Africa perspective
This article gives the pediatric anesthesia perspective from Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Gambia, five out of six countries in Anglophone West Africa. Over 40% of the population of most of these countries are younger than 14 years and there is an increasing need for paediatric anesthesia services.FINDINGS: Workforce density ranges from 0.08 to 0.58 physician anesthesia providers per 100,000 population. There are only 13 trained pediatric anesthetists; ratios range from 0 to 0.4 per 100,000 children, thus pediatric anesthesia services are provided by various cadres of physician and non-physician anesthesia provide...
