An Overview of Physical Activity Research Evolution in Africa: The Global Observatory for Physical Activity-GoPA!
CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide an overview and status of PA research in Africa, highlighting country differences and gender inequalities in authorship. The findings may be used to benchmark the evolution of research in the region and to inform areas for improvement. There is an urgent need for more PA interventions and policy studies in Africa.PMID:38412851 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2023-0455 (Source: Journal of Physical Activity and Health)

Potentially Zoonotic Enteric Infections in Gorillas and Chimpanzees, Cameroon and Tanzania
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Mar;30(3):577-580. doi: 10.3201/eid3003.230318.ABSTRACTDespite zoonotic potential, data are lacking on enteric infection diversity in wild apes. We employed a novel molecular diagnostic platform to detect enteric infections in wild chimpanzees and gorillas. Prevalent Cryptosporidium parvum, adenovirus, and diarrheagenic Escherichia coli across divergent sites and species demonstrates potential widespread circulation among apes in Africa.PMID:38407249 | DOI:10.3201/eid3003.230318 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

A pregnant woman with long-standing, retained intraabdominal glass shards who gave birth to a live infant with no complications: a case report
ConclusionIn pregnant women sustaining a penetrating glass trauma during pregnancy, careful attention should be paid to the fragments; in that case, computed tomography is a useful modality for accurately visualizing any remaining fragments in the body. Essentially, the foreign bodies in glass shard injuries during pregnancy should be removed immediately, but conservative management for term delivery is an important choice for patients at risk for preterm delivery. A case for the inclusion of oculocutaneous albinism as a skin-related Neglected Tropical Disease
Med Trop Sante Int. 2023 Oct 24;3(4):mtsi.v3i4.2023.434. doi: 10.48327/mtsi.v3i4.2023.434. eCollection 2023 Dec 31.ABSTRACTOculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is genetically transmitted. In this paper we advocate for this disease to be included in the NTD list of the WHO. OCA type 2 is the most common form of albinism in sub-Saharan Africa, with a prevalence of 1 in 7900 among the Bamileke of Cameroon, 1 in 3900 in South Africa and 1 in 1100 among the Ibos of Nigeria, as compared to a prevalence of 1 in 10,000 among African Americans and 1 in 36,000 among White Americans and Europeans. The medical problems related to ophthalmolo...

Molecular characterization of Haemoproteus enucleator with emphasis on the host and geographic distribution
This study combined microscopic and molecular approaches to characterize Haemoproteus enucleator morphologically and molecularly. Blood samples were collected from the African pygmy kingfisher Ispidina picta in Cameroon, and the parasite was identified using morphological characters of gametocytes. The analysis of partial cytochrome b sequences (cytb) identified a new Haemoproteus lineage (hISPIC03), which was linked to the morphospecies H. enucleator. Illustrations of blood stages were provided and the phylogenetic analysis showed that the new lineage clustered with five other closely related lineages belonging to the sam...

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of contraceptive methods among students in public and private high schools in Cameroon
This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of contraceptive methods among students, aged 15 to 25 years, in public and private schools in the district of Bonaberi, Douala, Cameroon. This research was modeled on the pattern of descriptive study. The population in this study was composed of students (N = 1649) from the five public and private high schools of Bonaberi, Cameroon. The sample size of this study was 379 students. These data were collected in person by the researcher between 1 and 30, June 2022. The data collection tools are the student information form, the Knowledge and Practices of Contra...
