Morphological, molecular, and MALDI-TOF MS identification of bed bugs and associated Wolbachia species from Cameroon
This study presents the basic information of infestations of tropical bed bugs, Cimex hemipterus (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), in Cameroon. A total of 248 immature stage and adult bed bug specimens were collected from households and a travel agency in Yaoundé and Douala, Cameroon. The ability of MALDI-TOF MS to identify bed bugs was tested using heads for adults and cephalothoraxes for immature stages. Microorganism screening was performed by qPCR and confirmed by regular PCR and sequencing. Based on morphometrical criteria, four stages of immature bed bugs are represented. Of the 248 bed bug specimens morphologically identifie...

Characterization and typology of guinea pig breeding in the Department of Menoua-Western Region, Cameroon
AbstractA survey was carried out on 356 breeders in the Department of the Menoua Region of West Cameroon to characterize guinea pig breeding systems, using descriptive analysis, factorial analysis of multiple correspondences (AFCM), and upward hierarchical classification (CAH). Three types of guinea pig breeders have been identified, discriminated according to the size of the herd and the professional character of the breeding. Most of the housing systems were of the traditional type, free-ranging on the ground. Feed generally was based on fodders and food residues, and hygiene conditions were considered as good. The main ...

Impact of a small-scale tsetse fly control operation with deltamethrin impregnated “Tiny Targets” on tsetse density and trypanosomes’ circulation in the Campo sleeping sickness focus of South Cameroon
by Tito Tresor Melachio Tanekou, Calmes Ursain Bouaka Tsakeng, Inaki Tirados, Alphonse Acho, Jude Bigoga, Charles Sinclair Wondji, Flobert Njiokou BackgroundSignificant progress has been made towards African sleeping sickness elimination in the last decade. Indeed, the World Health Organization (WHO) global goal of eliminating the chronic form of the disease as a public health problem was achieved in 2020 (i.e., (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of multidrug resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales isolated from clinical samples in the western region in Cameroon
The 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) report has listed extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) as critical pathogens for public health and requiring urgently new antibiotics. The aim... (Source: BMC Infectious Diseases)

Comparison of in-hospital mortality in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease in a resource-limited setting before and during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, although the consultation frequency decreased, the mortality rate of sickle cell disease patients remained unchanged.PMID:37989661 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2023.10.001 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

Mycorrhizas and Trichoderma fungi increase the accumulation of secondary metabolites in grain legume leaves and suppress foliar diseases in field-grown conditions of the humid forest of Cameroon
Arbuscular mycorrhizal and Trichoderma fungi alter the synthesis of secondary metabolites of plants and confer tolerance from pathogens attacks. However, there is less supportive evidence from on-field studies... (Source: BMC Plant Biology)

Leukocyte ratios in non-diabetic hypertensive Cameroonians do not predict cardiovascular risk  : preliminary results of the HYRICCA project
CONCLUSION: Leukocyte ratios are not useful for CVR assessment in hypertensive Cameroonians with respect to the WHO 2019 risk score. Prospective studies are needed to assess their usefulness in combination with conventional risk factors to improve prediction of cardiovascular events.PMID:37984238 | DOI:10.1016/j.ancard.2023.101679 (Source: Annales de Cardiologie et d'Angeiologie)

Community evaluation of the physical and insecticidal durability of DuraNet ® Plus, an alpha-cypermethrin and piperonyl butoxide incorporated mosquito net: protocol for a multi-country study in West, Central and East Africa
ConclusionThis large-scale multi country trial will provide useful information on the durability of a pyrethroid-PBO net (DuraNet ® Plus) in 3 different regions in sub-Saharan Africa. The methods proposed for bioefficacy testing could also contribute towards the development of new standardised guidelines for monitoring the insecticidal efficacy of pyrethroid-PBO nets under operational conditions. Haptoglobin gene polymorphism and iron profile in sickle cell disease patients with inflammation in Yaounde, Cameroon
ConclusionThis study demonstrates a higher frequency of genotypeHP 1-1 followed by theHP 2-2 genotype in patients with major sickle cell syndromes. However, a larger proportion of patients with genotypeHP 2-2 are associated with hematological profile disorders, inflammation, and dysregulation of iron metabolism. Then, the haptoglobin polymorphism contributes to the severity of major sickle cell syndromes. (Source: Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine)
