Is trauma research neglecting neurodiverse populations? A systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence ACEs in adults with autistic traits
Elanor Webb, Benedetta Lupattelli Gencarelli, Grace Keaveney, Deborah Morris Advances in Autism, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- The prevalence of exposure to adversity is elevated in autistic populations, compared to neurotypical peers. Despite this, the frequency and nature of early adverse experiences are not well understood in autistic adults, with several underlying methodological limitations in the available literature. The purpose of this study is to systematically synthesise and analyse the prevalence of childhood adversity in this marginalised population, in accordance with the adverse childhood exp...

The impact of excessive maternal weight on the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders in offspring-a narrative review of clinical studies
Pharmacol Rep. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.1007/s43440-024-00598-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe global prevalence of overweight and obesity is a significant public health concern that also largely affects women of childbearing age. Human epidemiological studies indicate that prenatal exposure to excessive maternal weight or excessive gestational weight gain is linked to various neurodevelopmental disorders in children, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, internalizing and externalizing problems, schizophrenia, and cognitive/intellectual impairment. Considering that inadequate matern...

The concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of a submaximal exercise test in adolescents with autism
CONCLUSION: The ART is an accessible and promising method to monitor submaximal CRF levels over time but is less appropriate to estimate maximal CRF levels in this population.PMID:38644598 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2340704 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Enhancing early autism diagnosis through machine learning: Exploring raw motion data for classification
by Maria Luongo, Roberta Simeoli, Davide Marocco, Nicola Milano, Michela Ponticorvo In recent years, research has been demonstrating that movement analysis, utilizing machine learning methods, can be a promising aid for clinicians in supporting autism diagnostic process. Within this field of research, we aim to explore new models and delve into the detailed observation of certain features that previous literature has identified as prominent in the classification process. Our study employs a game-based tablet application to collect motor data. We use artificial neural networks to analyze raw trajectories in a "drag and dro...

Views of Genetic Testing for Autism Among Autism Self-Advocates: A Qualitative Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study, the first to use in-depth qualitative interviews to assess views of autism self-advocates regarding genetic testing, highlights key complexities. Respondents felt that such testing is neither wholly good or bad in itself, but rather may be acceptable depending on how it is used, and should be employed in beneficial, not harmful ways. These findings have important implications for practice, education of multiple stakeholders, research, and policy.PMID:38643392 | DOI:10.1080/23294515.2024.2336903 (Source: AJOB Primary Research)

Community Priorities for Outcomes Targeted During Professional Supports for Autistic Children and their Families
CONCLUSION: Reflecting the growing acceptance of neurodiversity-affirming practices, these results underscore support for targeting outcomes that are meaningful to the autistic and autism communities, with less emphasis on those which reflect neurotypical behavioural standards.PMID:38642180 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-024-06333-2 (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

Investigating Parental Observations of Early Autism Development in Simplex and Multiplex Families
This study explored the number and frequency of retrospective parent reported concerns within the first year of life for children diagnosed with autism, both those who had an older sibling diagnosed with autism and those who did not, as well as for undiagnosed siblings. We found that at both 0-6 and 7-12 months, the only factor related to the presence or absence of early parent reported concerns was child diagnostic status, with the presence of reported early concerns more likely for children with a diagnosis of autism. These findings suggest that for children at elevated likelihood of autism, parents' concerns are driven ...

Is cholesterol both the lock and key to abnormal transmembrane signals in Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Disturbances in cholesterol homeostasis have been associated with ASD. Lipid rafts are central in many transmembrane signaling pathways (including mTOR) and changes in raft cholesterol content affect their ord... (Source: Lipids in Health and Disease)
