Motor proficiency of persons with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or autism spectrum disorder diagnosed in adulthood
CONCLUSIONS: Motor proficiency is impaired in most persons with ADHD or ASD diagnosed in adulthood, suggesting that motor assessment should be included in clinical examinations of adults with suspected neurodevelopment disorders.PMID:38632964 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2340123 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Relationships Between Affiliate Stigma, Special Education Plans, and Family-school Partnerships Among Latino Parents of Children with Disabilities
AbstractLegislative mandates dictate that students with disabilities are provided instruction, services, and supports needed to progress in school (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act [IDEA] Part B,2004) which can be in the form of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) for children three and under, and 504 plans. A number of studies have highlighted the ways in which these formal educational processes may increase stress among parents (Rios et al.,Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders,73(March), 101534,2020). However, formal educational processes may also be protective in...

Long-Term Outcomes after Behavior-Analytic Intervention for Pediatric Feeding Disorders
AbstractMany children with autism spectrum disorder experience feeding difficulties that can lead to increased health risks (e.g., severe nutrition deficiencies, obesity-related illnesses) if left untreated. Intensive feeding programs that use behavior-analytic interventions have reported positive outcomes for treating challenging behavior associated with pediatric feeding disorders at discharge and up to 1 year post discharge. Whether these children achieve and maintain long-term goals is unknown. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate outcomes of behavior-analytic intervention for pediatric feeding disorders am...

Examining Autism Spectrum Using the Attention Network Test: A Meta-Analysis
AbstractAttentional deficits are common in autism spectrum disorder. This project aimed to assess three attentional networks (alerting, orienting, and executive control). We conducted a Bayesian hierarchical meta-analysis of studies that implemented the Attention Network Test or its variants to explore whether autistic individuals exhibited differences in the networks of attention when compared to typically developing controls. Ten studies were included in our analysis, comprising 421 children and adults with the age ranging from 4 to 58 years (M = 16.79). Through a Bayesian analysis, we find weak evidence that autisti...

Using GPS and Self-Report Data to Examine the Relationship Between Community Mobility and Community Participation Among Autistic Young Adults
CONCLUSION: Health policymakers and providers should consider community mobility as a factor that can affect community participation in autistic individuals. Plain-Language Summary: Lower levels of community participation among autistic young adults affect health outcomes and overall quality of life. Community mobility is often a barrier to community participation. An understanding of the relationship between community mobility and community participation can lead to occupational therapists tailoring specific interventions and policies that support autistic young adults to engage in important life activities within the com...

The Role of Multiple Birth and Birth Complications in the Association Between Assisted Reproductive Technology Conception and Autism Diagnosis
Am J Epidemiol. 2024 Apr 15:kwae049. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwae049. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn recent decades, the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has increased rapidly. To assess the relationship between ART and autism diagnosis, we linked California birth records from 2000 through 2016 with contemporaneous records from the National ART Surveillance System (NASS) and autism caseload records from California's Department of Developmental Services from 2000 through November 2019. All 95,149 birth records that were successfully linked to a NASS record, indicating an ART birth, were matched 1:1 using propensity ...

Specific Phobia, Fear, and the Autism Spectrum in Children and Adolescents: Adapting OST for ASD
Clin Child Fam Psychol Rev. 2024 Apr 17. doi: 10.1007/s10567-024-00475-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFears and phobias are a common mental health concern for youth, and particularly for autistic youth. The following review briefly summarizes the extant literature on specific phobias and specific phobias in autistic youth. The evidence base is briefly highlighted pointing to the strong base behind behavioral and cognitive-behavioral treatments and techniques. A broad discussion of key evidence-based treatment findings is presented, leading up to the impactful work of Thomas H. Ollendick in researching Öst's One-Session ...

Profile of paediatric occupational therapy practice in Eastern Mediterranean countries
CONCLUSION: Paediatric occupational therapists are usually exposed to specific age groups and conditions. However, a lack of knowledge practice in some areas and challenges in others exist.SIGNIFICANCE: Within the EM region, knowledge regarding therapists' practices is lacking. Actions should be taken to improve current practice and meet the current needs of clients, and utilise evidence-based practices.PMID:38631391 | DOI:10.1080/11038128.2024.2342536 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy)

Conduction velocity, G-ratio, and extracellular water as microstructural characteristics of autism spectrum disorder
This study is the first to reveal that ASD involves MRI-measurablein vivo differences of myelin and axonal development with implications for neuronal and behavioral function. We also introduce a novel formulation for calculating aggregate conduction velocity, that is highly sensitive to these changes. We conclude that ASD may be characterized by otherwise intact structural connectivity but that functional connectivity may be attenuated by network properties affecting neural transmission speed. This effect may explain the putative reliance on local connectivity in contrast to more distal connectivity observed in ASD. (Source: PLoS One)

Sex Differences in Autism Heritability and Likelihood
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that includes difficulties with communication, social interaction, and adjusting to unexpected change, alongside differences in narrow interests, unusually repetitive behavior, and sensory hypersensitivity. Some differences are strengths, such as excellent attention to detail. After years of multidisciplinary research, autism diagnosis still relies on behavioral assessments and no reliable biomarker has been consistently associated with the condition. Autistic people are very heterogeneous in their range of behaviors, cognitive skills, co-occurring conditions, and levels of disabili...

The Brain Gene Registry: a data snapshot
AbstractMonogenic disorders account for a large proportion of population-attributable risk for neurodevelopmental disabilities. However, the data necessary to infer a causal relationship between a given genetic variant and a particular neurodevelopmental disorder is often lacking. Recognizing this scientific roadblock, 13 Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (IDDRCs) formed a consortium to create the Brain Gene Registry (BGR), a repository pairing clinical genetic data with phenotypic data from participants with variants in putative brain genes. Phenotypic profiles are assembled from the electronic ...

Autistic traits and anthropomorphism: the case of vehicle fascia perception
Cogn Process. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s10339-024-01187-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndividuals high in autistic traits can have difficulties with social interactions which may stem from difficulties with mentalizing abilities, yet findings from research investigating anthropomorphism of non-human objects in high trait individuals are inconsistent. Measuring emotions and attributes of front-facing vehicles, individuals scoring high versus low on the AQ-10 were compared for ratings of angry-happy, hostile-friendly, masculine-feminine, and submissive-dominant, as a function of vehicle size (large versus small). Our res...
