Synthesis, characterization, and assessment of chitosan-nanomatrix enriched with antifungal formulation against biodeterioration of active ingredients of selected herbal raw materials
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Feb 13:123684. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.123684. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a potent natural group 1 carcinogen produced by Aspergillus flavus is considered an unavoidable toxic contaminant of herbal raw materials, which often deteriorates their active ingredients making them less effective and hazardous during their formulation in herbal drugs. The present investigation reports the antifungal (0.5 μl/ml) and AFB1 inhibitory (0.4 μl/ml) effects of the developed formulation CIM based on a mixture of essential oils (Carum carvi, and Illicium verum), and methyl anthranila...

Alkaloids in < b > < i > Withania somnifera < /i > < /b > (L.) Dunal Root Extract Contribute to Its Anti-Inflammatory Activity
The anti-inflammatory properties of the medicinal plantWithania somnifera (L.) Dunal (WS) are generally related to withanolides; consistently, several strategies are under investigation to increase the concentration of these compounds in WS extracts. However, a potential toxicity of withanolides has been highlighted, thus questioning the safety of such preparations. At variance, the relative contribution of alkaloids is underrated, in spite of preliminary evidence underlining a possible pharmacological relevance. Starting from these considerations, the efficacy/safety profile of WS root extract (WSE) was compared with thos...

Early cancer detection using the fluorescent Ashwagandha chitosan nanoparticles combined with near-infrared light diffusion characterization: in vitro study
AbstractEarly cancer diagnosis through characterizing light propagation and nanotechnology increases the survival rate. The present research is aimed at evaluating the consequence of using natural nanoparticles in cancer therapy and diagnosis. Colon cancer cells were differentiated from the normal cells via investigating light diffusion combined with the fluorescence effect of the Ashwagandha chitosan nanoparticles (Ash C NPs). Ionic gelation technique synthesized theAsh C NPs. High-resolution transmission electron microscope, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential characterizedAsh C NPs. Fourier transform infrared s...

Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Ashwagandha); current understanding and future prospect as a potential drug candidate
Cancer and Neurodegenerative diseases are one of the most dreadful diseases to cure and chemotherapy has found a prime place in cancerous treatments while as different strategies have been tested in neurodegenerative diseases as well. However, due to adverse shortcomings like the resistance of cancerous cells and inefficiency in neurodegenerative disease, plant sources have always found a prime importance in medicinal use for decades, Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (W. somnifera) is a well-known plant with medicinal use reported for centuries. It is commonly known as winter cherry or ashwagandha and is a prime source of pha...

Phyto-Extract-Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Their Biological Activities
CONCLUSIONS: Both crude and AgNPs showed potent activity; however, in comparison, silver nanoparticles showed slightly enhanced activity. Crude and AgNPs of both plants showed good phytotoxic and insecticidal inhibition. Antimicrobial studies of AgNPs on diseases causing pathogens open a door for new antimicrobial agents and could be the answer to antibiotic resistance after further analysis.PMID:36440367 | PMC:PMC9683943 | DOI:10.1155/2022/9845022 (Source: Biomed Res)

Characterization and anticancer potential of Withania somnifera fruit bioactives (a native species to Pakistan) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer, nuclear magnetic resonance and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-electrospray ionization
CONCLUSION: We found that a variety of bioactive compounds existed in this plant. One identified compound that was not investigated for cytotoxicity in previous studies was purified and its application showed cytotoxicity on breast cancer cell lines. A number of bioactive identified from fruit may have an effective potential for development into chemotherapy drugs.PMID:36378048 | DOI:10.19852/j.cnki.jtcm.2022.06.006 (Source: Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine)
