Concerns about fertility, social appearance, and relationships in young adults with polycystic ovary syndrome
CONCLUSION: Young adults have common concerns about the potential negative impacts of PCOS on fertility, social appearance, and relationships. Health professionals should be aware of their counselling needs about the possible physical and psycho-social effects of PCOS and provide continuous care and support.PMID:38695338 | DOI:10.1080/02646838.2024.2348645 (Source: Journal of Reproductive and Infant Psychology)

Urine tenofovir testing for real-time PrEP adherence feedback: a qualitative study involving transgender women in Uganda
CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating POC urine testing into routine PrEP adherence counselling was acceptable and potentially beneficial for TGW but required attention to context. Additional research is needed to identify effective strategies for optimizing adherence monitoring and counselling for this population.PMID:38695107 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26255 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

GABA transporter mGat4 is involved in multiple neural functions in mice
Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Cell Res. 2024 Apr 30:119740. doi: 10.1016/j.bbamcr.2024.119740. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTγ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. The termination of GABA transmission is through the action of GABA transporters (GATs). mGAT4 (encoded by Slc6a11) is another GAT besides GAT1 (encoded by Slc6a1) that functions in GABA reuptake in CNS. Research on the function of mGAT4 is still in its infancy. We developed an mGat4 knockout mouse model (mGat4-/- mice) and performed a series of behavioral analyses for the first time to study the effect of m...

Overview of long COVID in Brazil: a preliminary analysis of a survey to think about health policies
Cad Saude Publica. 2024 Apr 29;40(4):e00094623. doi: 10.1590/0102-311XPT094623. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTCharacterized by symptoms that remain or appear for the first time within three months of SARS-CoV-2 infection, long COVID can manifest itself in different ways, including in non-hospitalized or asymptomatic cases. Thus, this study offers an overview of long COVID in Brazil, especially of its diagnosis, symptoms, and challenges for new health management. Data from a study that investigated long COVID in people affected by COVID-19 were used. These original data stem from a survey with adult Brazilians (aged 18 years or ...

Birth in Brazil II: a postpartum maternal, paternal and child health research protocol
This article presents a research protocol for estimating the prevalence of postpartum mental health outcomes in mothers and fathers, abuse and satisfaction in delivery/abortion care, and the correlations between them and socioeconomic, obstetric, and child health factors. As a 2-component research, it consists of a prospective cohort study with all postpartum women interviewed in the 465 maternity hospitals included at the Birth in Brazil II baseline survey conducted from 2021 to 2023, and a cross-sectional study with the newborns' fathers/partners. Interviews will be conducted via telephone or self-completion link sent by...

Fear, defense, and emotion: A neuroethological understanding of the negative valence research domain criteria
We describe the close correspondence between predatory imminence continuum theory (PICT) and the National Institute of Mental Health's Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) for negative valence. RDoC's negative valence constructs relate aversively motivated behavioral reactions to various levels of threat. PICT divides defensive responses into distinct modes that vary along a continuum of the psychological closeness of predatory threat. While there is a close correspondence between PICT modes and negative valence threat constructs, based on PICT, we describe some potential elaborations of RDoC constructs. Both have consonant vie...

Beyond the modified dot-probe task: A meta-analysis of the efficacy of alternate attention bias modification tasks across domains
Clin Psychol Rev. 2024 Apr 27;110:102436. doi: 10.1016/j.cpr.2024.102436. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAttention biases towards disease-relevant cues have been implicated in numerous disorders and health conditions, such as anxiety, cancer, drug-use disorders, and chronic pain. Attention bias modification (ABM) has shown that changing attention biases can change related emotional processes. ABM most commonly uses a modified dot-probe task, which has received increasing criticism regarding its reliability and inconsistent findings. The purpose of the present review was thus to systematically review and meta-analyse alterna...

Healthcare avoidance during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and all-cause mortality: a longitudinal community-based study
Conclusion We found an increased risk of all-cause mortality among individuals who avoided healthcare during COVID-19. These individuals were characterised by poor mental and physical self-appreciated health. Therefore, interventions should be targeted to these vulnerable individuals to safeguard their access to primary and specialist care in order to limit health disparities, inside and beyond healthcare crises.PMID:38697627 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0637 (Source: The British Journal of General Practice)

Impact of Abl2/Arg Deficiency on Anxiety and Depressive Behaviors in mice
In this study, we developed Abl2/Arg knockout (arg-/-) mice to explore its impact on sensory/motor functions and emotion-related behaviors. Our findings show that arg-/- mice exhibit normal growth and phenotypic characteristics, closely resembling their wild-type (WT) counterparts. Behavioral tests, including the elevated plus maze, marble-burying behavior test, and open field test, indicated pronounced anxiety-like behaviors in arg-/- mice compared to WT mice. Furthermore, in the tail suspension test, arg-/- mice showed a significant decrease in mobility time, suggesting depressive-like behavior. Conversely, in the Y-maze...

The alpha1a antagonist tamsulosin impairs memory acquisition, consolidation and retrieval in a novel object recognition task in mice
In conclusion, tamsulosin impaired memory acquisition, consolidation and retrieval in an object recognition task in mice, thus affecting memory performance in a non-specific phase manner. These findings contribute to our understanding of the potential adverse effects of tamsulosin, and shed light on the role played by α1-adrenoceptors, particularly α1A- subtype, in cognitive processes.PMID:38697302 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbr.2024.115027 (Source: Brain Research)

Mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: the importance of social support in midlife women
CONCLUSION: Social support, but not financial stress, influenced mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic at midlife, particularly for women.PMID:38695574 | DOI:10.1080/13697137.2024.2340476 (Source: Climacteric)

Evaluation of the relationship between restless legs syndrome, mental status, and sleep disorders among Moroccan women during their third trimester of pregnancy
CONCLUSION: RLS is encountered during the prenatal period, with a higher prevalence in the last trimester. During this stage of pregnancy, women suffering from RLS were vulnerable to anxiety and sleep disorders. Prevention and early diagnosis of RLS could be a proactive healthcare management leading to better health outcomes and better conditions of pregnancy, which precedes childbirth.PMID:38694400 | PMC:PMC11060302 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001987 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Walking the tightrope: Fertility preservation among hereditary breast and ovarian Cancer syndrome Previvors
CONCLUSION: Patients with HBOC did not undergo expedited fertility treatment compared to control patients undergoing oocyte and embryo cryopreservation for non-infertility reasons. Patients diagnosed with BRCA1 had more oocytes retrieved compared to the control population which is possibly due to earlier age of presentation in the setting of recommended age of risk reducing surgery being age 35-40. When age matched, cycle outcomes did not differ between HBOC and control patients. Given the known cancer prevention benefit and recommendations for risk-reducing surgery, future studies should focus on guidelines for fertility ...
