Acute kidney injury and liver disease in an American bulldog with suspected leptospirosis
Can Vet J. 2024 Apr;65(4):385-388.ABSTRACTA 6-year-old spayed female American bulldog was brought to a veterinary clinic with a 3-day history of vomiting, lethargy, anorexia, icterus, hemorrhagic diarrhea, and oliguria. The dog's clinical signs, complete blood (cell) count, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, and diagnostic imaging were indicative of acute kidney injury and acute hepatopathy consistent with leptospirosis. Treatment for leptospirosis was initiated but, due to the dog's lack of response and progression of clinical signs, euthanasia was ultimately elected after 3 d of hospitalization. The dog tested negative for ...

Body weight variation is not an independent factor in the determination of functional hypothalamic amenorrhea in anorexia nervosa
ConclusionsFHA does not correlate strictly with body weight variations in AN patients, indicating a multifactorial origin, likely including an individual predisposition. Higher FT3 levels identify patients who continue having menses at extremely low BMI. AN patients with persistent FHA constitute a subgroup in whom estroprogestins should be considered after significant weight recovery to prevent prolonged tissue hypoestrogenism. Gut microbiome alterations at acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis are associated with muscle weakness and anorexia
Haematologica. 2024 Mar 28. doi: 10.3324/haematol.2023.284138. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe gut microbiota makes critical contributions to host homeostasis, and its role in the treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) has attracted attention. We investigated whether the gut microbiome is affected by AML, and whether such changes are associated with cachectic hallmarks. Biological samples and clinical data were collected from 30 antibiotic-free AML patients at diagnosis and matched volunteers (1:1) in a multicenter cross-sectional prospective study. The composition and functional potential of the faecal microbiota we...

Eating disorders among international migrants: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionMigrants were found to have a lower prevalence of eating disorders compared to local populations, supporting the healthy immigrant hypothesis. However, this effect differs between diagnostic and risk assessment tools. (Source: Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology)

Eating Disorder Symptomatology Among Young Adult Cigarette and E-Cigarette Users
Discussion: Our findings suggest young adults with ED symptomatology were more likely to be users of e-cigarettes exclusively or dual users. It will be necessary to examine how these associations manifest using longitudinal and clinical populations in future research.PMID:38533542 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2330910 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)
