Thiamine deficiency as a cause of anorexia in terminally ill cancer patients: A case of possible gastrointestinal beriberi
The objective of this report was to describe such a case.METHODS: An 82-year-old woman with advanced cervical cancer was admitted for palliative care because of progressive disease. One month after admission, she developed myoclonus on the left side, difficulty speaking, slurred speech, and drooping of the left corner of the mouth, with no consciousness disturbance. She also developed nausea and complained of decreased dietary intake for more than 2 weeks.RESULTS: The patient's thiamine level, which had been measured 2 weeks earlier, was 27 ng/ml, which was below the normal range, and 100 mg of thiamine was administered in...

A case of surgical treatment for bronchial foreign bodies with obstructive pneumonia
Herein, we present a case of a foreign body in the airway of an older adult that could not be removed using bronchoscopy and required surgery. AbstractChildren and older adults are prone to unintentional foreign body aspiration. A 69-year-old man with fever and anorexia presented with obstructive pneumonia resulting from foreign body aspiration. Attempts to remove the foreign body using a bronchoscope failed due to its adhesion to the periphery of the bronchus. Although antibiotic therapy did not improve the obstructive pneumonia caused by the bronchial foreign body, surgery enabled an improvement. The surgical specimen sh...

Established and emerging treatments for eating disorders
Trends Mol Med. 2024 Mar 18:S1471-4914(24)00034-0. doi: 10.1016/j.molmed.2024.02.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEating disorders (EDs) are common mental health conditions that carry exceedingly high morbidity and mortality rates. Evidence-based treatment options include a range of psychotherapies and some, mainly adjunctive, pharmacological interventions. However, around 20-30% of people fail to respond to the best available treatments and develop a persistent treatment-refractory illness. Novel treatments for these disorders are emerging, but their efficacy and clinical relevance need further investigation. In this re...

Comprehensive elucidation of resting-state functional connectivity in anorexia nervosa by a multicenter cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Stronger rsFCs in regions containing mainly DLPFC, and weaker rsFCs in regions containing primarily cerebellum, within temporal lobe, between posterior fusiform cortex and lateral part of visual network, and between ACC and thalamus, may represent categorical diagnostic markers discriminating AN patients from HC.PMID:38500410 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000485 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Reduced dorsal fronto-striatal connectivity at rest in anorexia nervosa
CONCLUSIONS: Decreased coupling of dorsal fronto-striatal regions indicates that circuit-based abnormalities persist at rest and suggests this network may be a potential treatment target.PMID:38497102 | DOI:10.1017/S003329172400031X (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Thiamine Deficiency Neuropathy in a Patient with Malnutrition due to Melancholic Depression
CONCLUSION: In our case, the rapid weight loss facilitated a cascade of complications related to nutritional deficiencies. Based on our clinical observations and the literature, thiamine deficiency should be considered in the presence of malnutrition and vulnerability, both on an organic and psychiatric level.PMID:38495842 | PMC:PMC10942818 | DOI:10.1155/2024/1797983 (Source: Case Reports in Psychiatry)

New aspects in etiology and treatment of adolescent anorexia nervosa-a  postulated bio-psycho-social model and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
This article outlines new research findings to decode the etiology of this serious disorder, especially a genetic disposition and changes of metabolism. Against the background of increasing rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of the gene-environment interaction is discussed, and new treatment forms are described. Besides the development of new biological treatment strategies, there is also some important progress in psychotherapeutic interventions. Carers should always be integrated when treating children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa, which is especially emphasized in the new "home treatment" settin...
