Efficacy and safety of aniseed powder for treating gastrointestinal symptoms of COVID-19: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial
Conclusion: This study showed that 2 weeks of aniseed powder containing trans-anethole (87%–94%) may help improve abdominal pain, anorexia, and diarrhea in COVID-19 patients. The findings align with the known biological, multitargeted activity of P. anisum and trans-anethole, which includes inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 along with other anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-dysbiosis properties. Multicenter trials with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up are warranted to confirm these findings.Clinical Trial Registration: Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT20120506009651N3). Anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) attenuates azoxymethane-induced colorectal cancer by antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic pathways in rats
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Dec 16. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-31349-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerbal medicine is one of the most common fields explored for combating colon cancers, and Pimpinella anisum L. seeds (PAS) have been utilized widely as medicinal agents because of their increased essential oil (trans-anethole) contents. In this essence, our study investigates the toxic effect and chemoprotective potentials of PAS against azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colon cancer in rats. The toxicity trial for PAS conducted by clustering fifteen rats into three groups (five rats each): A, normal control had 10% Tween 20; ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 7691: Illicium verum L. (Star Anise) Essential Oil: GC/MS Profile, Molecular Docking Study, In Silico ADME Profiling, Quorum Sensing, and Biofilm-Inhibiting Effect on Foodborne Bacteria
Snoussi Vincenzo De Feo Illicium verum, or star anise, has many uses ranging from culinary to religious. It has been used in the food industry since ancient times. The main purpose of this study was to determine the chemical composition, antibacterial, antibiofilm, and anti-quorum sensing activities of the essential oil (EO) obtained via hydro-distillation of the aerial parts of Illicium verum. Twenty-four components were identified representing 92.55% of the analyzed essential oil. (E)-anethole (83.68%), limonene (3.19%), and α-pinene (0.71%) were the main constituents of I. verum EO. The results show ...

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of essential oils for the control of Fusarium oxysporum in cherry tomato seeds
Braz J Biol. 2023 Oct 30;83:e274368. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.274368. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTFusarium oxysporum is the causal agent of Fusarium wilt in tomato plants. The most common form of control of this disease is through seed chemical treatment. However, the present work presents an alternative method, through the fumigation technique with essential oils. The pathogen F. oxysporum was inoculated on organic cherry tomato seeds through contact with sporulated Petri® plates. Thereafter, seeds were placed in stainless steel crucibles containing a 1.0 x 1.0 cm filter paper adhered to the lid and kept for 24 hours. This pa...

The impact of targeted fee increases on the pay disparity between female and male general surgeons in British Columbia
CONCLUSION: Targeted fee increases reduced pay disparity between male and female general surgeons compared with theoretical across-the-board fee increases in British Columbia from 2010/11 to 2019/20, but not uniformly; some fee increases resulted in increased disparity. Other physician groups should conduct a similar analysis and allocate future fee changes with the aim of improving rather than worsening disparity.PMID:37914209 | PMC:PMC10620007 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.000922 (Source: Canadian Journal of Surgery)
