Antibacterial mechanisms of star anise essential oil microcapsules encapsulated by rice protein-depolymerized pectin electrostatic complexation and its application in crab meatballs
Int J Food Microbiol. 2022 Oct 6;384:109963. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2022.109963. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA mixed solid matrix of the depolymerized pectin (DP) and rice protein (RP) were investigated to improve the antibacterial activity of star anise essential oil (SAEO) through microencapsulation. The encapsulation was undertaken via electrostatic complexation method followed by spray drying. Under the optimized conditions, SAEO microcapsules with 92.2 % encapsulation efficiency was acquired at 3:2 of DP-to-RP, 1:3 of DP-to-SAEO and pH 4.0. DP-RP/SAEO microcapsules exhibited a spherical-shaped particle with smal...

We agree with Reed et al. that the use of multimodal pain therapy is crucial to reducing opioid exposure in the post-operative setting. Ketorolac in particular has been shown in our study and others to be associated with decreased post-surgical opioid use with minimal added risk in properly selected patients. As the authors discussed, behavioral interventions that educate physicians on the harms of opioid use and provide feedback on their performance relative to their peers are also effective tools in mitigating opioid-associated harm. IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 12543: Recovery Experiences Protect Emotionally Exhausted White-Collar Workers from Gaming Addiction
This study aims to test the association between gaming addiction and emotional exhaustion as well as the protective effect of recovery experiences on such an association among white-collar workers. We recruited 205 working adults (female = 58%) who voluntarily completed an online questionnaire. The results showed that male and younger workers were more vulnerable to gaming addiction. Emotional exhaustion was significantly and positively associated, while two (i.e., relaxation and control) of the four recovery experiences were negatively correlated with gaming addiction. Control experience had an indirect effect on gaming a...

Urgent need for a non-discriminatory and non-stigmatizing nomenclature for monkeypox virus
PLoS Biol. 2022 Aug 23;20(8):e3001769. doi: 10.1371/journal.pbio.3001769. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe propose a novel, non-discriminatory classification of monkeypox virus. Together with the World Health Organization, we named three clades (I, IIa and IIb) in order of detection. Within IIb, the cause the current global outbreak, we identified multiple lineages (A.1, A.2, A.1.1 and B.1) to support real-time genomics surveillance.PMID:35998195 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pbio.3001769 (Source: Cancer Control)

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 8332: The Impact of Pandemic-Related Life Stress on Internet Gaming: Social Cynicism and Gaming Motivation as Serial Mediators
This study investigated the mediating roles of social cynicism, escape and coping motives on the association between daily disruption during COVID-19 and IGD, seeking to reveal the underlying mechanism that influences the effects of gaming. A total of 203 participants in Hong Kong who reported having played electronic games during COVID-19 were surveyed. We conducted three hierarchical multiple regressions, then tested a serial mediation model using path analysis with structural equation modeling. The results revealed that escape motives significantly mediated the relationship between daily disruption related to COVID-19 a...

External jugular vein aneurysm presenting as submandibular neck mass
J Surg Case Rep. 2022 May 31;2022(5):rjac244. doi: 10.1093/jscr/rjac244. eCollection 2022 May.ABSTRACTExternal jugular vein aneurysms presenting as neck masses is very rare in the literature. This case report presents an 80-year-old female, who was referred to the office due to an incidental finding of a left submandibular neck mass. The patient presented to her primary care physician initially complaining of bilateral intermittent ear pain that was present for several years. After extensive workup, the patient was diagnosed with a left external jugular vein aneurysm. When asymptomatic, this rare condition can be followed ...
