Comparison of antifungal activity of essential oils from different plants against three fungi.
Abstract The antifungal activity of plant essential oils (EOs) extracted by steam distillation from seven different species (Cinnamon, Anise, Clove, Citronella, Peppermint, Pepper, and Camphor) was investigated. Three common fungi were isolated from moldy wheat bread, which were identified as Aspergillus niger, A. oryzae, and A. ochraceus. The antifungal activity of anise, peppermint, clove, cinnamon, pepper, citronella, and camphor EOs from seven different spices was confirmed by agar diffusion assay against three fungi. Among all the EOs, the cinnamon EO showed the highest antifungal activity for all the ...

Effects of nanoemulsion-based active coatings with composite mixture of star anise essential oil, polylysine, and nisin on the quality and shelf life of ready-to-eat Yao meat products
Publication date: Available online 16 July 2019Source: Food ControlAuthor(s): Qiong Liu, Min Zhang, Bhesh Bhandari, Jicheng Xu, Chaohui YangAbstractThe negative effects exerted by chemical and thermal preservations on health and food quality have led to a rising interest in the active coating with natural antimicrobials, as a novel alternative. The aim of this study was to prepare and characterize the nanoemulsion incorporated with the mixture of star anise essential oil, polylysine and nisin, then evaluate the influences of nanoemulsion-based active coating (NEAC) on quality attributes and shelf life of Yao meat. Herbs and Spices- Biomarkers of Intake Based on Human Intervention Studies – A Systematic Review
AbstractCulinary herbs and spices have been used as both food flavoring and food preservative agents for centuries. Moreover, due to their known and presumptive health benefits, herbs and spices have also been used in medical practices since ancient times. Some of the health effects attributed to herbs and spices include antioxidant, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory effects as well as potential protection against cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. While interest in herbs and spices as medicinal agents remains high and their use in foods continues to grow, there have been remarkably...

Effects of star anise (Illicium verum Hook.f.) essential oil on nutrient and energy utilization of laying hens
AbstractAn experiment using 96 Hy ‐Line brown laying hens at 29 weeks of age that were randomly allocated to four treatments with eight replicates was conducted to assess the effects of star anise (Illicium verum Hook.f.) oil (SAO) on nutrient and energy utilization. Dietary treatments were corn –soybean meal‐based diets supplemented with 0, 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg SAO. The birds were fed the diets for 14 days. The conventional nutrients and amino acids of feed and excreta samples were measured for calculating apparent metabolic efficiency, and gross energy (GE) was analyzed for compu tation of apparent metabolic ...

Shikimic acid promotes estrogen receptor(ER)-positive breast cancer cells proliferation via activation of NF- κB signaling.
Shikimic acid promotes estrogen receptor(ER)-positive breast cancer cells proliferation via activation of NF-κB signaling. Toxicol Lett. 2019 Apr 29;: Authors: Ma X, Ning S Abstract Shikimic acid (SA), a widely-known hydroaromatic compound enriched in Bracken fern and Illicium verum (also known as Chinese star anise), increases the risk of gastric and esophageal carcinoma, nevertheless, the influence of SA on breast cancer remains indistinct. Herein we found that, with models in vitro, SA significantly promoted estrogen receptor(ER) positive cells proliferation and NF-κB activat...

Prevalence of herbal medicines in patients with chronic allergic disorders in Western Saudi Arabia.
Conclusion: Despite the insufficient evidence, there was a high prevalence of herbal medicines used by allergic patients (more than half), especially in bronchial asthma. Black seed, anise and olibanum were the most commonly used. PMID: 30957134 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

Antifungal activity of palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii), tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and star anise (Illicium verum) essential oils against Penicillium expansum and their mechanisms of action
This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial effects of Cymbopogon martinii, Illicium verum and Melaleuca alternifolia essential oils (EOs) against P. expansum, elucidating their mechanisms of action. The P. expansum conidia were exposed to the vapor phase of the EOs, in different concentrations (0.125 g L-1 to 1 g L-1), for different times (1–24 h). Their fungicidal/fungistatic effects assessed in vitro, and their mechanisms of action investigated through DNA, protein and glucose extravasation, lipid damage, reactive oxygen species accumulation and antioxidant activity. In situ, their antimicrobial activities were...
