Braz J Biol. 2023 Jan 6;84:e266940. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.266940. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThis is a case control and cohort study, conducted at Department of Biochemistry in FUAST, compressing 24 number of albino Wistar rats. Illicium verum (star anise) natural spice and green vegetable broccoli are used for chemo-preventive herbal treatment in relation with vitamin C antioxidant activity. Hepatotoxicity was induced in liver of model rats by giving interperitoneally single injection of 200 mg/kg bod weight (B.W) of N-nitrosodiethylamine and orally giving 1 mg/kg BW phenobarbital for 14 days during disease prorogation per...

Childhood environment and adulthood food addiction: Testing the multiple mediations of life history strategies and attitudes toward self
Appetite. 2023 Jan 3;182:106448. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2023.106448. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFood addiction is associated with both physical and mental health conditions, such as obesity and depression, and is considered a public health problem. Based on life history (LH) theory, this study aimed to test the association between unpredictable childhood environment and food addiction in adulthood and to examine LH strategies and attitudes toward self as psychological mediators of this association. A random sample of 1010 adults, aged from 18 to 88 years (44.8% male; Mage = 38.52, SDage = 14.53), voluntarily participated ...

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 33: Higher Risk for Sensitization to Commonly Consumed Herbs among Adults and Youngsters Suffering from Birch, Mugwort or Grass Pollinosis
Conclusion: The study demonstrates that youngsters suffering from pollinosis are at high risk of developing allergic reactions to herbs and highlights the importance of including native skin prick tests with herbs in the diagnostic work-up for suspected food allergy. IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 16535: Psychometric Properties of the Abbreviated Version of the Dual School Climate and School Identification Measure & ndash;Student (SCASIM-St15) among Adolescents in China
This study validated the Chinese version of SCASIM-St15 among 1108 students from junior middle schools, senior middle schools, and vocational high schools in Taizhou city, Zhejiang, China, via an anonymous, self-administered cross-sectional survey. Confirmatory factor analysis supports the 5-factor model of the original SCASIM-St15 with a satisfactory model fit. Its four factors (i.e., student–student relations, staff–student relations, academic emphasis, and shared values and approach) assess school climate; its fifth factor assesses school identification. The subscales of the SCASIM-St15 demon...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 14738: The Application of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Model to Gambling Urge and Involvement
Conclusions: As the first study to apply the intolerance of uncertainty model to real-life gambling, it found that individuals’ intolerance of uncertainty and impulse control difficulties contributed to more gambling urge and involvement. Improving emotion regulation skill (e.g., impulse control training) may, therefore, be considered in programs for promoting responsible gambling among Chinese gamblers. Antibacterial mechanisms of star anise essential oil microcapsules encapsulated by rice protein-depolymerized pectin electrostatic complexation and its application in crab meatballs
Int J Food Microbiol. 2022 Oct 6;384:109963. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2022.109963. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA mixed solid matrix of the depolymerized pectin (DP) and rice protein (RP) were investigated to improve the antibacterial activity of star anise essential oil (SAEO) through microencapsulation. The encapsulation was undertaken via electrostatic complexation method followed by spray drying. Under the optimized conditions, SAEO microcapsules with 92.2 % encapsulation efficiency was acquired at 3:2 of DP-to-RP, 1:3 of DP-to-SAEO and pH 4.0. DP-RP/SAEO microcapsules exhibited a spherical-shaped particle with smal...
