Unique Brewing-Relevant Properties of a Strain of Saccharomyces jurei Isolated From Ash (Fraxinus excelsior)
The successful application of Saccharomyces eubayanus and Saccharomyces paradoxus in brewery fermentations has highlighted the potential of wild Saccharomyes yeasts for brewing, and prompted investigation into the application potential of other members of the genus. Here, we evaluate, for the first time, the brewing potential of Saccharomyces jurei. The newly isolated strain from an ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) in Upper Bavaria, Germany, close to the river Isar, was used to ferment a 12°P wort at 15°C. Performance was compared directly with that of a reference lager strain (TUM 34/70) and the S. eubayanus type strain. B...

Mental distress during the COVID-19 pandemic: Its association with public perceptions toward government's pandemic responses and lifestyle changes
Curr Psychol. 2021 Mar 3:1-9. doi: 10.1007/s12144-021-01547-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn order to propose better mental health interventions under the pandemic threat, the present study aimed to investigate whether depression and anxiety are associated to Chinese adults' perceptions of government's pandemic responses and the personal lifestyle changes imposed by those responses during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used a telephone survey with random sampling and obtained a probability community sample of 616 adults (39.1% men; M age = 41.7, SD age = 16.3) in Macao, China in April 2020. The prevalence of 8.8% probable de...

Cognitive aging is associated with redistribution of synaptic weights in the hippocampus [Neuroscience]
Behaviors that rely on the hippocampus are particularly susceptible to chronological aging, with many aged animals (including humans) maintaining cognition at a young adult-like level, but many others the same age showing marked impairments. It is unclear whether the ability to maintain cognition over time is attributable to brain maintenance,... (Source: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)

Use of complementary and alternative therapies in infants under 3 months in Jordan.
Conclusions: The use of complementary and alternative medicines for babies is common in Jordan. Efforts are needed to increase awareness among mothers of the risks, side-effects and efficacy of complementary and alternative therapies in infants. Effects of star anise (Illicium verum Hook.f.) essential oil administration under three different dietary energy levels on growth performance, nutrient, and energy utilization in broilers
AbstractThis experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of star anise essential oil (SAO) supplementation in diets with different energy levels on growth performance, nutrient metabolic efficiency of broilers. One hundred and ninety ‐two Arbor Acres male broiler chicks at 28 days of age were divided into a 3 × 4 factorial arrangement design with three dietary energy levels (13.41, 12.82, 12.23 MJ/kg) and 4 levels of SAO supplementation (0, 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg of diet). Dietary supplementation with SAO increased (p <  .05) apparent metabolic efficiency of CP, EE, GE, and all of the amino acids excep...

Unraveling the Molecular Mechanisms of Fructus Anisi Stellati as a Remedy for Infantile Colic by Network Pharmacology.
Authors: Li X, Xu Y Abstract Fructus anisi stellati (FAS) is an anise-scented star-shaped fruit from Illicium verum tree. It is commonly consumed in many cultures as food and medicine, particularly as a remedy for infantile colic (IC). The elucidation of molecular mechanisms of action would contribute to the understanding of the traditional therapy of FAS and help to guide the preclinical and clinical study of this herb. The aim is to investigate the key therapeutic compounds of FAS and to explore the underlying molecular mechanisms of FAS therapy. The chemical compounds of FAS were obtained through data m...

Anise Hyssop Agastache foeniculum Increases Lifespan, Stress Resistance, and Metabolism by Affecting Free Radical Processes in Drosophila
Anise hyssop, Agastache foeniculum, is a widely used medicinal herb with known antioxidant properties. We studied how dietary supplementation with dried A. foeniculum leaf powder affected physiological and metabolic traits as well as activities of antioxidant enzymes and markers of oxidative stress in Drosophila melanogaster. Dietary hyssop extended the lifespan in a sex and genotype independent manner over a broad range of concentrations up to 30 mg/ml. Dietary supplementation with the herb significantly increased fecundity, resistance to oxidative stress and starvation. Higher transcript levels of Drosophila insulin-like...
