Guidelines for Reasonable and Appropriate Care in the Emergency Department (GRACE-4): Alcohol use disorder and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome management in the emergency department
Acad Emerg Med. 2024 May;31(5):425-455. doi: 10.1111/acem.14911.ABSTRACTThe fourth Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Guidelines for Reasonable and Appropriate Care in the Emergency Department (GRACE-4) is on the topic of the emergency department (ED) management of nonopioid use disorders and focuses on alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), alcohol use disorder (AUD), and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS). The SAEM GRACE-4 Writing Team, composed of emergency physicians and experts in addiction medicine and patients with lived experience, applied the Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evalua...

Medication error with methotrexate
Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2024 Mar 21;144(6). doi: 10.4045/tidsskr.23.0657. Print 2024 May 14.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: A woman in her seventies presented to the accident and emergency department (A&E) with shortness of breath that had increased over a period of three weeks. She had a history of COPD, hypertension and polymyalgia rheumatica. A medication error involving methotrexate, used for autoimmune diseases, was discovered during her medical history review.CASE PRESENTATION: The patient arrived with stable vital signs, including 94 % oxygen saturation and a respiratory rate of 20 breaths/min. She had been taking 2.5 mg of...

Trajectory planning framework for autonomous vehicles based on collision injury prediction for vulnerable road users
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 14;203:107610. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107610. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDue to the escalating occurrence and high casualty rates of accidents involving Electric Two-Wheelers (E2Ws), it has become a major safety concern on the roads. Additionally, with the widespread adoption of current autonomous driving technology, a greater challenge has arisen for the safety of vulnerable road participants. Most existing trajectory planning methods primarily focus on the safety, comfort, and dynamics of autonomous vehicles themselves, often overlooking the protection of vulnerable road users (VRUs), typica...

Association between radiation dose, thyroid hormone, and IQ levels in children exposed to radiation in utero after the Chernobyl accident
Int J Radiat Biol. 2024 May 15:1-7. doi: 10.1080/09553002.2024.2345088. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFew studies have explored the effects of n utero radiation exposure on human health and cognition and none have taken into account thyroid hormone levels (T3), which have shown to affect cognitive performance. We investigated mechanisms of possible radiation effects on IQ in two cohorts of 250 persons each: exposed n utero after the Chernobyl accident: a 'higher exposure group (HEG)', whose mothers resided in more heavily contaminated territories at the time of the Chernobyl accident, and a 'lesser exposure group (LEG)' wh...

A Case of Anterior Single Tooth Implant with Fractured Zirconia Abutment due to Trauma
This report describes a case of implant treatment for a 23-year-old man with esthetic disturbance due to trauma to the maxillary anterior teeth. The left maxillary central incisor could not be conserved due to this trauma, which had been caused by a traffic accident. After extraction, the tooth was restored with an anterior bridge. The crown of the left maxillary lateral incisor was fractured at the crown margin and, at the patient's request, implant treatment was selected as the restorative treatment for the missing tooth. A thorough preoperative examination was performed using placement simulation software. One titanium ...

Trauma exposure correlates among patients receiving care in federally qualified health centers
This study addresses this by examining clinical and sociodemographic correlates of specific trauma types among FQHC patients. We analyzed secondary data from patients who screened positive for PTSD and were receiving health care in FQHCs in a clinical trial (N = 978). Individuals who did versus did not experience a specific trauma type were compared using between-group tests. In the sample, 91.3% of participants were exposed to aDSM-5 Criterion A traumatic event, with 79.6% experiencing two or more trauma types. Witnessing a life-threatening event (57.3%) and physical assault (55.7%) were the most common traumatic experien...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1878: Historical Perspective and Current Trends in Anticancer Drug Development
Mirowski Cancer is considered one of the leading causes of death in the 21st century. The intensive search for new anticancer drugs has been actively pursued by chemists and pharmacologists for decades, focusing either on the isolation of compounds with cytotoxic properties from plants or on screening thousands of synthetic molecules. Compounds that could potentially become candidates for new anticancer drugs must have the ability to inhibit proliferation and/or induce apoptosis in cancer cells without causing too much damage to normal cells. Some anticancer compounds were discovered by accident, others as a result of...

Displaced proximal humeral fractures in skeletally immature patients: functional outcomes of surgical treatment
ConclusionSurgical treatment of severely displaced proximal humerus fractures is successful, both with closed and open reduction; type of implant does not play a key role and should be selected based on the characteristics of each case. Surgical training should prevail at the time of decision-making. When these recommendations are followed, results can be excellent and sequelae are infrequent. Traumatic dental injuries among children attending the public after-hours emergency dental clinic in Bergen, Norway
CONCLUSIONS: Traumatic dental injuries were a common reason for seeking emergency care. Milder injuries dominated and involved mostly one maxillary central incisor. Previous episodes of TDIs and attendance patterns seemed to be associated with seeking care for TDIs.PMID:38742966 | DOI:10.2340/aos.v83.40622 (Source: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica)

Low blood glucose and fatigue accumulation at peak hours of occupational trauma in secondary industry workers
Conclusions. Blood glucose levels decreased and subjective fatigue levels increased at the time points that occupational accidents were reported to occur most frequently during work. These factors may contribute to human errors due to impaired attentional function.PMID:38741548 | DOI:10.1080/10803548.2024.2347742 (Source: International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics)

Analyzing relationships between latent topics in autonomous vehicle crash narratives and crash severity using natural language processing techniques and explainable XGBoost
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 13;203:107605. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107605. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSafety is one of the most essential considerations when evaluating the performance of autonomous vehicles (AVs). Real-world AV data, including trajectory, detection, and crash data, are becoming increasingly popular as they provide possibilities for a realistic evaluation of AVs' performance. While substantial research was conducted to estimate general crash patterns utilizing structured AV crash data, a comprehensive exploration of AV crash narratives remains limited. These narratives contain latent information about AV ...
