Three distinct patterns of mental health response following accidents in mountain sports: a follow-up study of individuals treated at a tertiary trauma center
AbstractThe restorative effect of physical activity in alpine environments on mental and physical health is well recognized. However, a risk of accidents and post-accident mental health problems is inherent to every sport. We aimed to characterize mental health in individuals following mountain sport accidents requiring professional medical management. Adult victims of mountain sport accidents treated at the hospital of the Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria) between 2018 and 2020 completed a cross-sectional survey at least 6  months following the admission (median 44 months,n = 307). Symptoms of post-traumatic ...

Part 1: Management of Antithrombotic Medications in Dermatologic Surgery
Perioperative management of antithrombotic agents requires practical and medical considerations. Discontinuing antithrombotic therapies increases the risk of thrombotic adverse events including cerebrovascular accidents, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and retinal artery occlusion. Conversely, continuation of antithrombotic therapy during surgical procedures has associated bleeding risks. Currently, no guidelines exist regarding management of antithrombotic agents in the perioperative period for cutaneous surgeries and practice differs by surgeon. Rare Presentation of a Patient with Cardiac Arrest Due to Cerebral Fat Embolization Following Polytrauma
J Assoc Physicians India. 2023 Nov;71(11):89-93. doi: 10.59556/japi.71.0389.ABSTRACTCerebral fat embolism (CFE) syndrome is a known complication that can occur following polytrauma, particularly in cases involving fractures of long bones, but cardiac arrest is a rare presentation following cerebral fat embolization.1 Our patient met with a road traffic accident (RTA), sustaining multiple long bones injuries with hypovolemic shock. After 10 hours of admission and achieving hemodynamic stability, the patient developed cerebral fat embolization. He developed sudden cardiac arrest and was resuscitated. We instituted ventilator...

Diagnostic Performance of Ultrasonography for Identification of Small Bowel Obstruction; a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: The findings of this meta-analysis showed that the utilization of ultrasonography holds promise as a diagnostic imaging for SBO with high accuracy. However, additional worldwide studies are essential to get more evidence on the value of ultrasonography for the diagnosis of SBO.PMID:38721448 | PMC:PMC11077389 | DOI:10.22037/aaem.v12i1.2265 (Source: Accident and Emergency Nursing)

Patients' Knowledge and Pharmacists' Practice Regarding the Long-Term Side Effects of Proton Pump Inhibitors; a Cross-sectional Study
CONCLUSION: The present study has established that a considerable proportion of PPI users in the UAE lack the necessary awareness about the potential adverse effects of PPI despite their extensive use in this country. The current pharmacist practice is inefficient for inculcating the potential harms of chronic PPI use and they are required to optimize their efforts to educate patients and bridge the knowledge gaps.PMID:38721447 | PMC:PMC11077387 | DOI:10.22037/aaem.v12i1.2305 (Source: Accident and Emergency Nursing)

Pre-crash scenarios for safety testing of autonomous vehicles: A clustering method for in-depth crash data
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 8;203:107616. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107616. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutonomous vehicles (AVs) provide an opportunity to enhance traffic safety. However, AVs market penetration is still restricted due to their safety concerns and dependability. For widespread adoption, it is crucial to thoroughly assess the safety response of AVs in various high-risk scenarios. To achieve this objective, a clustering method was used to construct typical testing scenarios based on the China In-depth Mobility Safety Study-Traffic Accident (CIMSS-TA) database. Initially, 222 car-to-powered two-wheelers (PTWs) ...

Evaluating the safety and efficiency impacts of forced lane change with negative gaps based on empirical vehicle trajectories
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 8;203:107622. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107622. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA lane-changing (LC) maneuver may cause the follower in the target lane (new follower) to decelerate and give up space, potentially affecting crash risk and traffic flow efficiency. In congested flow, a more aggressive LC maneuver occurs where the lane changer is partially next to the new follower and creates negative gaps, namely negative gap forced LC (NGFLC). Although NGFLC forms the foundation of sideswipe crashes, little has been done to address its impacts and the contributing factors. To tackle this issue, a total o...

Safety in higher level automated vehicles: Investigating edge cases in crashes of vehicles equipped with automated driving systems
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 8;203:107607. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107607. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith emerging Automated Driving Systems (ADS) representing Automated Vehicles (AVs) of Level 3 or higher as classified by the Society of Automotive Engineers, several AV manufacturers are testing their vehicles on public roadways in the U.S. The safety performance of AVs has become a major concern for the transportation industry. Several ADS-equipped vehicle crashes have been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in recent years. Scrutinizing these crashes can reveal rare or complex scenari...

Cerebral fat embolism with turbid urine as the initial sign
CONCLUSION: CFE can present with isolated lipiduria preceding overt neurological or respiratory manifestations. Heightened awareness of this subtle sign in high-risk patients is crucial for early diagnosis and intervention. Prompt urine screening and neuroimaging should be considered when gross lipiduria occurs after long bone fractures.PMID:38722041 | DOI:10.1080/02699052.2024.2352870 (Source: Brain Injury)
