Overtaking maneuvers on two-lane highways under the microscope: Exploration of a multidimensional framework for the analysis of safety, comfort and efficiency using simulator data
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 4;202:107613. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107613. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn unreasonable overtaking attempt on two-lane highways could cause drivers to suffer in terms of driving safety, comfort, and efficiency. Several external factors related to the traffic environment (e.g., speed and car type of surrounding vehicles), were found to be the significant factors in drivers' overtaking performance in the previous studies. However, the microscopic decision-making (e.g., the moments of the occupation of the opposite lane) mechanisms during overtaking, by means of which drivers react to changes in ...

Highly conserved and extremely variable: the paradoxical pattern of toxin expression revealed by comparative venom-gland transcriptomics of Phalotris (Serpentes: Dipsadidae)
In this study, we address such shortage of knowledge by providing new insights about the venom composition among species of Phalotris, a poorly studied Neotropical dipsadid genus. Phalotris are known for their specialized venom delivery system and toxic venoms, which can cause life-threatening accidents in humans. We evaluate the venom-gland transcriptome of Phalotris, comparing the following three South American species: P. reticulatus for the Araucaria Pine forests, P. lemniscatus for the Pampa grasslands, and P. mertensi for the Brazilian Cerrado. Our results indicate similar venom profiles, in which they share a high e...

Visual behavior of racing bike cyclists in multi-tasking situations
Hum Mov Sci. 2024 May 4;95:103224. doi: 10.1016/j.humov.2024.103224. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDistracted biking can have serious repercussions for the rider such as accidents. The purpose of the present experiment was to determine the effect of visually monitoring two parameters, the cadence, and the heart rate on a bike computer fixed on a racing bike, and simultaneously detect hazardous traffic situations. Individuals (n = 20) were instructed to ride a racing bike that was fitted onto a roller trainer. After conducting a bicycle step test to assess the maximal heart rate (HFmax), participants were assigned to a with...

Examining the impact of interventions in reducing self-reported engagement in distracted driving: A systematic review
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 3;202:107608. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107608. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the implementation of legal countermeasures, distracted driving remains a prevalent concern for road safety. This systematic review (following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines) summarised the literature on the impact of interventions targeting attitudes/intentions towards, and self-reported engagement in, distracted driving. Studies were eligible for this review if they examined self-reported behaviour/attitudes/intentions pertaining to distracted driving at baseline...

The development of a road safety policy index and its application in evaluating the effects of road safety policy
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 3;202:107612. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107612. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe paper presents an exploratory study of a road safety policy index developed for Norway. The index consists of ten road safety measures for which data on their use from 1980 to 2021 are available. The ten measures were combined into an index which had an initial value of 50 in 1980 and increased to a value of 185 in 2021. To assess the application of the index in evaluating the effects of road safety policy, negative binomial regression models and multivariate time series models were developed for traffic fatalities, fa...

Distracted on duty: A theory-based exploration of influences leading to mobile phone distracted riding among food delivery workers
Accid Anal Prev. 2024 May 3;202:107538. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2024.107538. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUsing mobile phones while riding is a form of distracted riding that significantly elevates crash risk. Regrettably, the factors contributing to mobile phone use while riding (MPUWR) among food delivery riders remain under-researched. Addressing this literature gap, the current study employs the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model and various socio-economic factors to examine the determinants of MPUWR. The research incorporates data from 558 delivery workers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The study utilizes two ana...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 592: Negative Aspects of Self-Imposed Evacuation among Mothers of Small Children Following Japan & rsquo;s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Accident
This study clarified the negative aspects of the self-imposed evacuation of mothers of small children seeking to avoid radiation exposure from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident on 11 March 2011. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 27 mothers, employing open-ended inquiries based on an interview guide. Our analysis of their responses using the Ka-Wakita-Jiro (KJ) method categorized the results into eight distinct groups comprising 142 labels. These categories included continued anxiety about the health effects of radiation, differences in risk perception, changes in spousal relationships, the ina...

Ixabepilone related angiographically silent macular edema
CONCLUSION: Angiographically silent intraretinal cystoid changes may develop in association with the use of ixabepilone. Referral to an ophthalmologist should be considered for the patients experiencing visual complaints as ixabepilone cessation may lead to visual improvement and avoid unnecessary treatment.PMID:38699790 | DOI:10.1177/11206721241237306 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)
