Prevalence of and factors associated with adult-onset asthma in different ethnic groups: the HELIUS study
Little is known about adult-onset asthma in different ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to examine ethnic differences in the prevalence of adult-onset asthma and factors associated with this phenotype.Cross-sectional data of 23,356 participants of the HELIUS study were used, including Dutch, South-Asian Surinamese, African Surinamese, Moroccan, Turkish and Ghanaian origin participants. Adult-onset asthma was defined as: self-reported asthma symptoms or start of asthma-medication at age ≥ 18 years combined with a smoking history (Source: Respiratory Medicine)

Do ethnic inequalities in multimorbidity reflect ethnic differences in socioeconomic status? The HELIUS study
ConclusionsWe found a significantly higher prevalence of multimorbidity in ethnic minority men and women compared to Dutch, and results pointed to an earlier onset of multimorbidity in ethnic minority groups. These inequalities in multimorbidity were not fully accounted for by differences in SES. (Source: The European Journal of Public Health)

Interaction and involvement of cellular adhesion molecules in the pathogenesis of schistosomiasis mansoni.
Abstract Parasites from genus Schistosoma currently infect more than 200 million people worldwide. Infection with Schistosoma mansoni causes intestinal schistosomiasis with geographical distribution across Africa, Middle East, Caribbean, Brazil, Venezuela and Suriname. People with schistosomiasis mansoni suffer from a chronic disease as result of an exacerbated immune response to the eggs deposited in hepatic tissue. The presence of eggs in the tissue triggers the recruitment and activation of immune cells to wall off and isolate them from the rest of the organism. In this context, immune cells turn activa...

Barriers and motivators of Ghanaian and African ‐Surinamese migrants to donate blood
AbstractAfrican migrants are underrepresented as blood donors in many Western countries, which can lead to shortages of specific blood types for transfusion. More insight in the reasons for this underrepresentation is required to improve blood donor recruitment and retention strategies. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore barriers and motivators for donating blood among migrants of African background. The research population consisted of first and second generation African ‐Surinamese (n = 20) and Ghanaian (n = 16) migrants living in the Netherlands. In semi‐structured personal interviews performed in ...

Use of the Fagerstr öm Test to assess differences in the degree of nicotine dependence in smokers from five ethnic groups: The HELIUS study
The prevalence of smoking varies greatly across countries. Western European countries, such as the Netherlands, have intermediate prevalence (Ng et al., 2014) while the estimated prevalence of daily smoking in men is relatively low in African countries. At a global level, women smoke consistently less than men (Ng et al., 2014). Similar differences across ethnic populations are observed within immigrant populations in high income countries. For example, one study performed in three immigrant populations in the Netherlands showed that the prevalence of smoking is higher in Turkish and Surinamese origin men (63% and 55%, res...

Determination of insect infestation on stored rice by near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy
Publication date: March 2019Source: Microchemical Journal, Volume 145Author(s): Alessandra Biancolillo, Patrizia Firmani, Remo Bucci, Andrea Magrì, Federico MariniAbstractAmong grains, rice is one of the most widely consumed cereals in the world; it represents a staple food in great part of Asia and Africa, and it is also broadly diffused in America and Europe. One of the main issues of storing rice is to protect it from animal attacks; in particular, it is prone to insect infestation. Despite all the attempts made to avoid it (developing new physical barriers, traps and repellants), often food pests manage to break into ...

Chronic kidney disease and kidney health care status: the healthy life in Suriname (HeliSur) study
AbstractThe high cardiovascular risk burden in low- and middle-income countries is expected to lead to an explosive increase in chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, population data on CKD from these countries are scarce. Therefore, we assessed kidney health in Suriname. In the Healthy Life in Suriname (HeliSur) study, a random sample of the adult population, we collected data with standardized questionnaires, physical examination, and blood and urine samples analysed in a central laboratory. Prevalent CKD was graded with KDIGO guidelines. In addition, we assessed national data on prevalent renal replacement therapy (RRT)...

Prevalence of Caries among Schoolchildren in the Interior of Suriname.
Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of caries among children living in the interior of Suriname and to investigate the influence of the reachability of their habitats and different ethnicities on the prevalence of caries. As part of children's regular dental check-ups, data on the prevalence of caries were registered for schoolchildren (n = 1,309) living in four different regions. Prevalence of caries was expressed by the number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT index). Consequences of severe caries were recorded by counting the number of teeth with pulp involvement, ul...

Yellow fever cases in French Guiana, evidence of an active circulation in the Guiana Shield, 2017 and 2018.
Abstract French Guiana (FG) is a French overseas region bordering Brazil and Suriname that is considered endemic for yellow fever (YF); vaccination is compulsory for residents and travellers. In August 2017 and 2018, two sporadic YF cases were notified 1 year apart, confirming that sylvatic YF virus circulation is active in the region. YF vaccination coverage should be closely monitored and improved in FG and neighbouring territories and clinicians should be aware of the risk.
