Guillain-Barr é Syndrome in Suriname; Clinical Presentation and Identification of Preceding Infections
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is associated with various types of preceding infections including Campylobacter jejuni and cytomegalovirus, but there is also an association with arthropod borne viruses (arboviruses), such as Zika virus, that are endemic in tropical regions. Here we present the clinical characteristics of 12 GBS patients from Suriname that were hospitalized between the beginning of 2016 and half 2018. Extensive diagnostic testing was performed for pathogens that are commonly associated with GBS, but also for arboviruses, in order to identify the preceding infection that might have led to GBS. With this exte...

Prevalence of Disease-Related Undernutrition on Hospital Admission and Its Association With Functionality and Length of Hospital Stay in Multiethnic Suriname
Our aim was to describe the prevalence of disease-related undernutrition (DRU) on admission to a department of surgery in Suriname and to explore its association with ethnicity and adverse outcomes. All patients 18 years or older who were not pregnant were invited to participate. Data were collected on weight (history), length, fat-free mass index (FFMI) using bioimpedance analysis, and ethnicity. Age, sex, and diagnosis data were extracted from the medical files. Associations between DRU and ethnicity, functionality, and length of hospital stay were assessed using logistic and Cox regression analyses adjusting for age, se...

[Life course violence, pregnancy experiences, use of alcohol and pemba, in French Guiana women].
CONCLUSIONS: Data on violence in French Guyana show that young people and women declare more often having experienced physical violence, in or out of family life. Young women are overrepresented thus a survey in childbearing women must reveal a high frequency of these events. Our data allow us to go further, by associating this experience of violence and the experience of pregnancy with socio-demographic variables. We can thus see that the overall average obtained on a large number of indicators is smoothed by extremely contrasting situations, of women feeling safe or not, well followed or not for this pregnancy, etc. The ...

Ethnic differences in childhood right and left cardiac structure and function assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging
Conclusion: Right ventricular end-diastolic volume and left ventricular end-diastolic volume differ between ethnic subgroups in childhood, without affecting ejection fraction. Follow-up studies are needed to investigate whether these differences lead to ethnic differences in cardiac disease in adulthood. What is Known:•Ethnic differences in cardiovascular risk factors and disease are well-known and may originate in early-life.•The prevalence of cardiovascular disease differs between ethnic groups. What is New:•We examined ethnic differences in left and right cardiac structure and function in children using cMRI.•Righ...

IJERPH, Vol. 17, Pages 6806: Clustering of Poor Dietary Habits among Adolescents Aged 12 to 15 Years in 52 Low-Income and Middle-Income Countries
ang Very few studies have reported the co-occurrence of poor dietary habits. We thus aimed to estimate the co-occurrence of poor dietary habits in adolescents in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Data were obtained from the Global School-Based Student Health Surveys (GSHS) from 2009 to 2017. The suboptimal dietary factors included fast food consumption, carbonated soft drink consumption, and low fruit and vegetable intake, which were assessed with a questionnaire survey. We calculated the corresponding country-specific prevalence with the number of suboptimal dietary factors. We also calculated pooled est...
