Ethnic variations in metabolic syndrome components and their associations with the gut microbiota: the HELIUS study
ConclusionsThe occurrence of MetS characteristics among ethnicities is heterogeneous. Both ethnic-independent and ethnic-specific associations were identified between the gut microbiota and MetS outcomes. Across multiple ethnicities, a one-size-fits-all approach may thus be reconsidered in regard to both the definition and/or treatment of MetS and its relation to the gut microbiota. Temporal trends of carbonated soft-drink consumption among adolescents aged 12-15 years from eighteen countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas
Br J Nutr. 2024 Jan 16:1-8. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000059. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCarbonated soft-drink consumption is detrimental to multiple facets of adolescent health. However, little is known about temporal trends in carbonated soft-drink consumption among adolescents, particularly in non-Western countries. Therefore, we aimed to examine this trend in representative samples of school-going adolescents from eighteen countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Cross-sectional data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey 2009-2017 were analysed. Carbonated soft-drink consumption referred to drinking ca...

Understanding transmission risk and predicting environmental suitability for Mayaro Virus in Central and South America
The objective of this study was to clarify the geographic distribution of MAYV using an established risk mapping framework. This consisted of generating evidence consensus scores for MAYV presence, modeling the potential distribution of MAYV in select countries across Central and South America, and estimating the population residing in areas suitable for MAYV transmission. We compiled a georeferenced compendium of MAYV occurrence in humans, animals, and arthropods. Based on an established evidence consensus framework, we integrated multiple information sources to assess the total evidence supporting ongoing transmission of...

Evaluating elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Suriname: a mixed method study
CONCLUSIONS: HIV medication for mothers with HIV and their infants remains key in the prevention of mother-to-child-transmission of HIV. Early prenatal care with follow-up should be strengthened in Suriname.PMID:38111520 | PMC:PMC10727110 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.159 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 7178: Development of a Pilot Literacy Scale to Assess Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors towards Climate Change and Infectious Disease Dynamics in Suriname
een Lichtveld Prior research has shown that climate literacy is sparse among low- and middle-income countries. Additionally, no standardized questionnaire exists for researchers to measure climate literacy among general populations, particularly with regards to climate change effects on vector-borne diseases (VBDs). We developed a comprehensive literacy scale to assess current knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors towards climate change and VBD dynamics among women enrolled in the Caribbean Consortium for Research in Environmental and Occupational Health (CCREOH) cohort in Suriname. Items were generated by our research t...

Advocating for PCR-RFLP as molecular tool within malaria programs in low endemic areas and low resource settings
by Mergiory Y. Labadie-Bracho, Malti R. Adhin The road to malaria elimination for low- and middle-income countries is paved with obstacles, including the complexity and high costs of advanced molecular methods for genomic analysis. The usefulness of PCR-RFLP as less complex and affordable molecular surveillance tool in low-endemic malaria regions was assessed in a cross-sectional study conducted in Suriname, currently striving for malaria elimination, but plagued by recentP.vivax outbreaks. Molecular analysis of two highly polymorphic genesPvmsp-1 F2 and Pvmsp-3 α was performed for 49 samples, collected during October 20...

Hepatocellular carcinoma risk in Sub-Saharan African and Afro-Surinamese individuals with chronic hepatitis B living in Europe
Cross-sectional studies have identified individuals from sub-Saharan Africa with (SSA) chronic hepatitis B (CHB) as a potential risk group for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the incidence of HCC and performance of HCC risk scores in this population are unknown. (Source: Journal of Hepatology)

A pooled analysis of temporal trends in the prevalence of anxiety-induced sleep loss among adolescents aged 12 –15 years across 29 countries
ConclusionTrends in the prevalence of anxiety-induced sleep loss in adolescents varied significantly across different countries. Generally, a stable trend was observed in 21 of the 29 countries surveyed. Our study provides data that can aid policymakers in establishing country-specific strategies for reducing anxiety-induced sleep loss in adolescents. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

50.2 The Caribbean Crisis: Addressing the Surge in Child and Adolescent Suicide Ideation and Attempts
The objectives of this presentation are to: 1) analyze the effectiveness of strategies for suicide prevention in the Caribbean region; and 2) apply the concept of familismo to case examples and analyze its effectiveness in reducing child and adolescent suicide risk. Child and adolescent suicide ideation and attempts have surged across the Caribbean in recent years with stigma, poverty, limited access to mental health, and reliance on folk remedies contributing to alarming rates in countries such as Guyana and Suriname. A step back from oil exploration in Brazil | Science
The Brazilian Equatorial Margin, located along the country ’s northern coast between the states of Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte, is considered the new frontier for deep-water oil exploration (1). Recent oil discoveries in the waters of nearby countries, such as Guyana, French Guiana, and Suriname (2), highlight a potential that attracts the Brazilian in dustry and the international oil and gas market. However, this region, which includes the mouth of the Amazon River, harbors biodiversity that provides environmental services to a large riverine and Indigenous population (3, 4). Brazil’s government, which recently too...
