Elementary, my lung fibrosis: unravelling elemental aspects in IPF pathology
Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study focused on the elemental aspects on IPF human samples. Our data suggest an important role of Fe, S, Ca and Zn dysregulation in IPF. Correlative imaging as performed here opens an avenue to study lung diseases displaying also an elemental imbalance. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Kinetic and structural details of urease inactivation by thiuram disulphides
J Inorg Biochem. 2023 Oct 10;250:112398. doi: 10.1016/j.jinorgbio.2023.112398. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper reports on the molecular details of the reactivity of urease, a nickel-dependent enzyme that catalyses the last step of organic nitrogen mineralization, with thiuram disulphides, a class of molecules known to inactivate the enzyme with high efficacy but for which the mechanism of action had not been yet established. IC50 values of tetramethylthiuram disulphide (TMTD or Thiram) and tetraethylthiuram disulphide (TETD or Disulfiram) in the low micromolar range were determined for plant and bacterial ureases....

The effect of the urban exposome on COVID-19 health outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: This systematic review has identified several key vulnerability features related to urban areas in the context of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The findings underscore the importance of improving policies related to urban exposures and implementing measures to protect individuals from these harmful environmental stressors.PMID:37852458 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2023.117351 (Source: Environmental Research)

Optimisation, characterization, and biological evaluation of novel exopolysaccharide from < em > Bacillus licheniformis < /em > (BITSL006)
Nat Prod Res. 2023 Oct 9:1-10. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2023.2265041. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study investigated production, characterisation, and biological properties of exopolysaccharide (EPS) from a thermophilic bacterium, Bacillus licheniformis using sucrose as a main carbon source at a temperature of 75 °C, resulting in a yield of 2.87 g/L. The surface topology of EPS was determined using FESEM indicating its porous nature. Subsequently, FTIR was employed to examine EPS and identified the presence of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, which are believed to be associated with water-holding capacity (WHC). Comparing...

Plantar Psoriasis Treated with Individualised Homoeopathic Medicine – A Case Report
Homœopathic Links DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1774323Psoriasis is a common non-infectious disease that is considered a chronic autoimmune condition. It is T-cell mediated and characterized by the rapid replacement of epidermal cells on the basal membrane level. Affecting approximately 2 to 3% of the population, around 3 to 4% of individuals with psoriasis experience palmoplantar psoriasis. This type of psoriasis can manifest at any age. Psoriasis, being a chronic skin disorder, impacts various aspects of an individual's social life. Homoeopathy has demonstrated positive outcomes in treating skin complaints. In this presentation, ...

Exploring the link between sulphur-containing compounds and noxious odours at waste management facilities: implications for odour monitoring and mitigation strategies
Arh Hig Rada Toksikol. 2023 Sep 30;74(3):179-186. doi: 10.2478/aiht-2023-74-3738. eCollection 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTWith this study we challenge the widely held assumption that sulphur-containing compounds in ambient air are good indicators of the presence noxious odours near waste management facilities. We analysed an extensive set of olfactometric data and data on the concentrations of hydrogen sulphide and trace sulphur compounds (TSCs) near a waste management facility in Croatia in 2021. The results show that the presence of noxious odours significantly correlates only with the concentrations of hydrogen sulphide and meth...
