Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2023 Dec;73(12). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.005934.ABSTRACTAn anaerobic hyperthermophilic archaeon was isolated from a black smoker chimney with a snail attachment at a water depth of 2 739 m in the Southwest Indian Ocean. The sample was taken from the chimney exterior wall. The enrichment was conducted under a continuous culture with temperature fluctuation of 80-130 °C over 24 h for 42 days at 28 MPa. The isolation was performed at 90 °C at 0.1 MPa. Cells of the isolated strain 813A4T were irregular cocci. Strain 813A4T grew at 60-94 °C (optimal growth at 85 °C) at 0.1 MPa, and growth was detecte...

Exposure to air pollution as an environmental determinant of how Sj ögren's disease is expressed at diagnosis
CONCLUSIONS: For the first time, we suggest that pollution levels could influence how SjD appears at diagnosis in a large international cohort of patients. The most notable relationships were found between symptoms (dryness and general body symptoms) and NO/SO, CO, and PM2.5 levels.PMID:38019154 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/p1r1j4 (Source: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology)

< em > Marinitoga aeolica < /em > sp. nov., a novel thermophilic anaerobic heterotroph isolated from a shallow hydrothermal field of Panarea Island in the Aeolian archipelago, Italy
Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2023 Nov;73(11). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.006186.ABSTRACTA novel thermophilic strain, designated BP5-C20AT, was isolated from the shallow hydrothermal field of the Panarea island in the Aeolian archipelago close to Sicily, Italy. Cells are motile rods surrounded with a 'toga', Gram-stain-negative and display a straight to curved morphology during the exponential phase. Strain BP5-C20AT is thermophilic (optimum 55 °C), moderately acidophilic (optimum pH 5.6) and halotolerant (optimum 25 g l-1 NaCl). It can use yeast extract, peptone and tryptone. It uses the following carbohydrates: cellobiose, fruct...

Chronic Hand Eczema Treated with an Individualised Homoeopathic Ultradilution —A Case Report
Homœopathic Links DOI: 10.1055/s-0041-1741057Eczema is a skin disease characterised by itching, redness, scaling and can be seen anywhere on the body, and the intensity of the complaints may vary individually. Hand eczema in the acute stage presents with macules, papules, vesicles and oedema; crusting, scaling, hyperkeratosis and fissure are the leading symptoms in the chronic stage if the complaints persist, lasting longer than 3 months or relapsing two or more times per year. However, it can also impact the patient's psychological health, as seen in the current case. Conventional treatment includes topical application a...

Allicin extracted from Allium sativum shows potent anti-cancer and antioxidant properties in zebrafish
This study aimed to develop a simple method for the extraction of allicin from fresh garlic, study the stability of the extracted compound at various temperatures, and evaluate the antioxidant, anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic and anti-angiogenic properties in zebrafish. A five-month stability study indicated that allicin remains significantly stable at temperatures 4 °C and below but shows extensive degradation if stored at room temperature. The in vivo studies in zebrafish using a combination of mutants and transgenic lines demonstrated the antioxidant, anti-proliferative, apoptotic and anti-angiogenic properties of al...
