Questioning risk compensation: pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men, capital region of Denmark, 2019 to 2022
ConclusionWe found a 35% increase in STI incidence associated with PrEP use. It started before PrEP initiation, challenging the assumption that PrEP leads to risk compensation. Instead, the data suggest that individuals seek PrEP during periods of heightened sexual risk-taking. Consequently, PrEP programmes should include sexual health consultations, STI testing, treatment and prevention strategies to prevent HIV and improve sexual health.PMID:38551099 | PMC:PMC10979528 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2024.29.13.2300451 (Source: Euro Surveill)

Ceftriaxone-Resistant Gonorrhea - China, 2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Mar 28;73(12):255-259. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7312a2.ABSTRACTGonorrhea is a widespread sexually transmitted infection; in 2022, China reported 96,313 cases of gonorrhea, making it the fourth most common notifiable infectious disease in the country after viral hepatitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and syphilis. The rise in prevalence in antimicrobial-resistant strains, particularly the international spread of ceftriaxone-resistant clones, poses a formidable challenge to gonorrhea control. The China Gonococcal Resistance Surveillance Program (China-GRSP), established in 1987 and covering 19 of 34 p...

Factors associated with hepatitis A susceptibility among men who have sex with men using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in Northeastern Brazil: A cross-sectional study
by Hareton Teixeira Vechi, M ônica Baumgardt Bay, Cláudio Henrique Silva de Freitas, Júlia Gomes Fernandes Costa de Sant’anna, Carlos Brites, Kenio Costa de Lima Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection has disproportionately affected more men who have sex with men (MSM), occurring in outbreaks, despite being vaccine-preventable. We determined the prevalence and factors associated with HAV susceptibility among cisgender MSM on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Northeastern Brazil. From September 30, 2021 to June 19, 2023, 282 cisgender MSM receiving HIV PrEP were enrolled into this cross-sectional study. Sociodemograph...

Infectious Disease Updates for Primary Care
This article summarizes the situation with public health threats for primary care patients as of early 2024 and provides updates on strategies for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common infections where new treatments and vaccines are available. For flu and COVID, an update on treatment is also provided —along with pearls useful for the busy primary care provider. The authors also discuss a new treatment option for drug-resistant vulvovaginal candidiasis and provide a balanced view of the increasingly popular technique of preventing bacterial sexually transmitted infections using doxycycline afte r condomless...

Editorial: Ex  vivo onco-testis microdissection
When a patient has a solitary testis, a testis mass, and azoospermia, this is the last possible time to obtain sperm from a patient for use in a biologic pregnancy. Options for treatment, in this case, are partial orchiectomy with in  vivo testis microdissection or radical orchiectomy and ex vivo testis microdissection. The decision on what is best is based on shared decision-making with both surgeon and patient based on size of the mass, risk of recurrence with a partial orchiectomy, and the possibility of retaining enough te stis tissue for production of endogenous testosterone and possible spermatogenesis. Don't Overlook Syphilis: An Atypical Rash in a Woman With Neurologic, Ocular, and Otic Involvement
We present a case of a 20-year-old immunocompetent heterosexual woman who presented with a rash atypical for secondary syphilis and accompanied by neurologic, ocular, and otic manifestations. This case highlights the importance of considering syphilis in the differential diagnosis of sexually active patients with a rash, even when their clinical presentations do not align with the textbook description of a syphilitic rash. Health care providers must remain vigilant for the diagnosis of syphilis in diverse clinical contexts, as early recognition and treatment are vital to prevent further syphilitic complications and transmi...

Unveiling the Dual Threat: How Microbial Infections and Healthcare Deficiencies Fuel Cervical and Prostate Cancer Deaths in Africa
Pathogens. 2024 Mar 10;13(3):243. doi: 10.3390/pathogens13030243.ABSTRACTCervical and prostate cancer account for 7.1 and 7.3 deaths per 100,000 people globally in 2022. These rates increased significantly to 17.6 and 17.3 in Africa, respectively, making them the second and third leading cause of cancer deaths in Africa, only surpassed by breast cancer. The human papillomavirus is the prime risk factor for cervical cancer infection. On the other hand, prostate cancer risks include ageing, genetics, race, geography, and family history. However, these factors alone cannot account for the high mortality rate in Africa, which ...

Impact of Genital Infections and Antibiotic Use on Incidence of Preterm Birth: A Retrospective Observational Study
This study investigates the complex interplay among genital infections, antibiotic usage, and preterm birth. This study aims to identify common genital pathogens associated with preterm births, assess the impact of various antibiotic treatments on pregnancy outcomes, and understand antibiotic resistance patterns among these pathogens. This study included 71 pregnant women who experienced preterm birth and 94 women with genital infections who delivered at term. Various maternal characteristics, medical history, signs and symptoms, gestational weight, gestational age, type of birth, vaginal pH, Nugent scores, and vaginal flo...
