The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social determinants of health, mental health, and substance use among key populations affected by sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections in Canada
CONCLUSION: These intersecting health issues are among the risk factors for STBBI acquisition and act as barriers to care. Equitable interventions and policies addressing downstream and upstream determinants of health, with meaningful and sustainable leadership from key populations, may improve their health and well-being, to lower STBBI impact and improve future pandemic responses.PMID:38691338 | DOI:10.17269/s41997-024-00888-4 (Source: Canadian Journal of Public Health)

Novel point-of-care cytokine biomarker lateral flow test for the screening for sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis: study protocol of a multicentre multidisciplinary prospective observational clinical study to evaluate the performance and feasibility of the Genital InFlammation Test (GIFT)
Introduction A prototype lateral flow device detecting cytokine biomarkers interleukin (IL)-1α and IL-1β has been developed as a point-of-care test—called the Genital InFlammation Test (GIFT)—for detecting genital inflammation associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and/or bacterial vaginosis (BV) in women. In this paper, we describe the rationale and design for studies that will be conducted in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Madagascar to evaluate the performance of GIFT and how it could be integrated into routine care. Methods and analysis We will conduct a prospective, multidisciplinar...

Risk Compensation After Initiation of Daily Oral Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Among Sexual and Gender Minorities in Nigeria
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1007/s10508-024-02859-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use may be associated with risk compensation. We enrolled and provided PreP to sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in Abuja, Nigeria between April 2018 and May 2019. Behavioral information and samples for urogenital and anorectal Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were collected at baseline. Blood samples for PrEP assay and self-reported adherence were collected at three-monthly follow-up visits. STIs were detected using Aptima Combo2 assay. We estima...

A case of guttate psoriasis after primary herpetic gingivostomatitis
We describe the case of a 23-year-old man with an acute episode of guttate psoriasis related to primary herpetic gingivostomatitis. The diagnosis of guttate psoriasis was pathologically confirmed and the condition fully regressed after proper antiviral therapy. This case adds herpes simplex virus to the growing list of pathogens capable of acting as triggers for guttate psoriasis and highlights the need for better insight of the relationship between psoriasis and viral infections.PMID:38679796 | DOI:10.1177/09564624241248873 (Source: Herpes)

Development of a scale for Attitude toward sexually transmitted infections based on the health Belief model
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) comprise various clinical syndromes that are caused by pathogens transmitted from one person to another via unprotected sexual contact. STI is an important public health concern in developing countries because of its high incidence and heavy disease burden due to complications and sequelae [1]. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 million individuals are estimated to be infected with STIs every day worldwide. Moreover, 374 million new cases of curable STIs are reported annually [2]. (Source: European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology)

Impact of HPV Vaccination on the Incidence of High-Grade Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN2+) in Women Aged 20-25 in the Northern Part of Norway: A 15-Year Study
This study aimed to assess the impact of HPV vaccination on the incidence of high-grade cervical precursors (CIN2+) among women aged 20-25 in Troms and Finnmark over a 15-year period.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this time series study, we analyzed cervical screening data from 15,328 women aged 20-25 in Troms and Finnmark, collected between 2008 and 2022. Statistical methods, including linear and logistic regression, were employed to evaluate changes in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 and worse (CIN2+) incidence and compare risks between vaccine-offered cohorts and pre-vaccine cohorts.RESULTS: The incidence of CIN2+...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 680: Human Papillomavirus and Associated Cancers: A Review
Rysavy The human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. Most HPV infections clear spontaneously within 2 years of infection; however, persistent infection can result in a wide array of diseases, ranging from genital warts to cancer. Most cases of cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers are due to HPV infection, with cervical cancer being one of the leading causes of cancer death in women worldwide. Screening is available for HPV and cervical cancer, but is not available everywhere, particularly in lower-resource settings. HPV infection disproportionally affects individuals liv...

Spatial distribution and determinants of HIV high burden in the Southern African sub-region
ConclusionsOur research findings show that analysis of survey data could provide reasonable estimates of the wide-ranging spatial structure of the HIV epidemic in Southern African countries. Key determinants such as individuals who are divorced, middle-aged women, and people who recently treated STIs, should be the focus of HIV prevention and control interventions. The spatial distribution of high-burden areas for HIV in the selected countries was more pronounced in the major cities. Interventions should also be focused on locations identified as hotspot clusters. (Source: PLoS One)

Medical students' knowledge about human papillomavirus (HPV), HPV vaccine and head and neck cancer
Hum Vaccin Immunother. 2024 Dec 31;20(1):2344248. doi: 10.1080/21645515.2024.2344248. Epub 2024 Apr 24.ABSTRACTThe Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that significantly affects the population worldwide. HPV preventive methods include vaccination, prophylactics, and education. Different types of cancers associated with HPV usually take years or decades to develop after infections, such as Head and Neck Cancer(HNC). Therefore, HPV prevention can be considered cancer prevention. A sample of medical students in Puerto Rico was evaluated to assess their knowledge about HPV, HPV vaccine, and HNC throu...

Seroprevalence of sexually transmitted infections over 44 years - A cross-sectional study in Sweden
CONCLUSIONS: There was a decrease over time in Chlamydia trachomatis seroprevalence, probably due to contact tracing, testing and early treatment; this might also have affected Mycoplasma genitalium seroprevalence. Despite the reduction, seroprevalences are still high, so continued and new efforts to reduce STI incidence are essential.PMID:38659325 | DOI:10.1177/09564624241248874 (Source: Herpes)

Comprehensive Overview of Treponema pallidum Outer Membrane Proteins
Curr Protein Pept Sci. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.2174/0113892037293502240328042224. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTreponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis, is a sexually transmitted microorganism that exhibits remarkable motility capabilities, allowing it to affect various systems. Despite its structural resemblance to gram-negative bacteria due to its dual-membrane, T. pallidum possesses a lower abundance of outer membrane proteins (OMPs), which enables it to effectively conceal itself. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of the clinical diagnostic potential associated with the OMPs of T. pallidum. Further...
