Trauma resident exposure in Canada and operative numbers (TraumaRECON): a national multicentre retrospective review of operative and nonoperative trauma teaching
CONCLUSION: General surgery residents who train in Canada receive variable and limited exposure to operative and nonoperative trauma care. These data can be used as a baseline to inform the application of competency-based medical education in trauma care for general surgery training in Canada.PMID:38453348 | PMC:PMC10927282 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.000223 (Source: Canadian Journal of Surgery)

Chronic disseminated candidiasis in a patient with acute leukemia - an illustrative case and brief review for clinicians
BMC Infect Dis. 2024 Mar 6;24(1):296. doi: 10.1186/s12879-024-09172-9.ABSTRACTChronic disseminated candidiasis (CDC) is a severe but rarely seen fungal infection presenting in patients with hematologic malignancies after a prolonged duration of neutropenia. A high index of suspicion is required to diagnose CDC as standard culture workup is often negative. While tissue biopsy is the gold standard of diagnosis, it is frequently avoided in patients with profound cytopenias and increased bleeding risks. A presumptive diagnosis can be made in patients with recent neutropenia, persistent fevers unresponsive to antibiotics, imagi...

Prognosis of LSPD versus TIPS for the treatment of esophagogastric variceal bleeding in cirrhosis
ConclusionCompared to TIPS, LSPD does not increase the risk of mortality and rebleeding, while demonstrating fewer complications. In patients classified as Child –Pugh A and B, the use of LSPD for treating EVB is both safe and effective. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Successful treatment of severe passenger lymphocyte syndrome with efgartigimod synergy
DISCUSSION: The synergistic effect of efgartigimod with eltrombopag and romiplostim most likely resolved the patient's thrombocytopenia. This case represents a novel use of efgartigimod in the treatment of passenger lymphocyte syndrome following liver transplant.PMID:38425280 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17748 (Source: Transfusion)

Rituximab versus Splenectomy in Chronic Primary ITP: Experience of a Single Hematology Clinic
Conclusion: The overall response revealed that splenectomy appeared superior to rituximab as a second-line treatment of ITP. Splenectomy was the only positive prognostic indicator of sustained response. (Source: Mediterranean Journal of Hematology and Infectious Diseases)

Abstract No. 124 Sequelae of Splenic Embolization by Age: A Retrospective Analysis
SAE is a widely used intervention to manage traumatic splenic hemorrhage and hypersplenism from varying diseases. Previous studies have indicated that older adult patients receiving SAE have a higher incidence of major complications following intervention. SAE complication rates have also been shown to be increased when performed distally. [3]. Surgical studies demonstrate higher rates of complications after laparoscopic splenectomy in older adults. The sequelae of SAE and associated complications, length of hospital stay (LOH), and need for splenectomy may not differ between age groups . (Source: Journal of Vascular and I...

Peritoneal B Cells Play a Role in the Production of Anti-polyethylene Glycol (PEG) IgM against Intravenously Injected siRNA-PEGylated Liposome Complexes
In this study, it is interesting that splenectomy (removal of spleen) did not prevent anti-PEG IgM induction by IV injection of PLpx. This indicates that B cells other than the splenic version are involved in anti-PEG IgM production under these conditions. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that peritoneal cells also secrete anti-PEG IgM in response to the administration of PLpx. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a glycoprotein that is secreted by peritoneal immune cells and has been detected in response to the in vivo administration of PLpx. These observations indicate that IV injection of PLpx stimulates the proliferation/dif...
