Abstract No. 124 Sequelae of Splenic Embolization by Age: A Retrospective Analysis
SAE is a widely used intervention to manage traumatic splenic hemorrhage and hypersplenism from varying diseases. Previous studies have indicated that older adult patients receiving SAE have a higher incidence of major complications following intervention. SAE complication rates have also been shown to be increased when performed distally. [3]. Surgical studies demonstrate higher rates of complications after laparoscopic splenectomy in older adults. The sequelae of SAE and associated complications, length of hospital stay (LOH), and need for splenectomy may not differ between age groups . (Source: Journal of Vascular and I...

Peritoneal B Cells Play a Role in the Production of Anti-polyethylene Glycol (PEG) IgM against Intravenously Injected siRNA-PEGylated Liposome Complexes
In this study, it is interesting that splenectomy (removal of spleen) did not prevent anti-PEG IgM induction by IV injection of PLpx. This indicates that B cells other than the splenic version are involved in anti-PEG IgM production under these conditions. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that peritoneal cells also secrete anti-PEG IgM in response to the administration of PLpx. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a glycoprotein that is secreted by peritoneal immune cells and has been detected in response to the in vivo administration of PLpx. These observations indicate that IV injection of PLpx stimulates the proliferation/dif...

An Approach to the Investigation of Thrombocytosis: Differentiating between Essential Thrombocythemia and Secondary Thrombocytosis
CONCLUSION: A practical approach to investigating patients with persistent thrombocytosis based on clinical characteristics such as active malignancy, chronic inflammatory disease, splenectomy, and iron deficiency may assist in accurately identifying patients more likely to have secondary causes of thrombocytosis and reduce overinvestigation, particularly costly molecular testing.PMID:38375212 | PMC:PMC10876298 | DOI:10.1155/2024/3056216 (Source: Advances in Hematology)
