Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe smallpox vaccine developed by Jenner in 1798 was successfully introduced in France in 1800 with the support of Napoleon Bonaparte. The medals and tokens (coin-like medals) issued to encourage early-day vaccination activities are described in the context of the changing political situation in that country. The Past Is Prologue
Within the lifetimes of my generation and the one immediately preceding, a number of public health triumphs have been accomplished. A vast array of antibiotics that could cure centuries-old incurable diseases such as Hansen disease (leprosy), syphilis, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, and many others has saved countless lives and relieved human suffering. Likewise, the earlier discovery of the effectiveness of exposure to small amounts of a communicable pathogen to prevent injury and death in humans exposed to smallpox, varicella, or measles introduced the age of the science of immunology. Historical Lessons on Vaccine Hesitancy: Smallpox, Polio, and Measles, and Implications for COVID-19
This study examines the history of US vaccination efforts against smallpox, polio, and measles, highlighting persistent drivers of vaccine hesitancy as well as factors that helped overcome it. The research reveals that logistical barriers, negative portrayals in the media, and fears about safety stymied inoculation efforts as early as the 18th century and continue to do so. However, vaccine hesitancy has been markedly diminished when trusted community leaders have guided efforts, when ordinary citizens have felt personally invested in the success of the vaccine, and when vaccination efforts have been tied to broader projec...
