The Past Is Prologue

Within the lifetimes of my generation and the one immediately preceding, a number of public health triumphs have been accomplished. A vast array of antibiotics that could cure centuries-old incurable diseases such as Hansen disease (leprosy), syphilis, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, and many others has saved countless lives and relieved human suffering. Likewise, the earlier discovery of the effectiveness of exposure to small amounts of a communicable pathogen to prevent injury and death in humans exposed to smallpox, varicella, or measles introduced the age of the science of immunology.
